JAGUAR UPDATE
Sunset Valley Elementary 11/11/16
Jaguar Corner
- It is hard to believe we are already to the middle of November! Wow! THANK YOU to our veterans and families who have given so much for our freedoms! Our children don't know a time of peace since 9/11. My dad served in The United States Marine Corps from 1965-1969 and is a Vietnam Veteran. Semper Fi!
- SVE has almost 500 students that we serve with a variety of educational needs. Within our school population, we do have students with severe allergies to food items and fragrances. In each instance, an allergic reaction can result in a significant medical concern (seizures, etc). Whether it is food or fragrance, a child having a reaction is of grave concern. Allergic reactions can range from mild to severe and can even be life threatening. As I mentioned last week, we are working hard to educate the school community and raise the level of awareness for all of us. As you come up to volunteer in classrooms, PTA parties, etc, please consider these student concerns as you come up to help. Thank you so much.
- November 8 was a great professional development day for staff. I know the Johnson children were thrilled with the day off. Thanks to everyone for their understanding. These are important days for us as teachers. This is how we get better at our craft. It is an opportunity for us to practice and hone our skills.
- The Lee's Summit School District Annual Performance report is out and the district continues to do well. The APR is the grade card for all 500+ districts in the state of Missouri. We are very fortunate on this side of the state to have excellent school districts and supportive communities. The APR for all districts in the KC Metro and Eastern Jackson County are fantastic. This is a testament to our teachers, kids, families, and supportive communities.
- Just a reminder: The United States is the only industrialized nation in the World that tests 100% of our kids 100% of the time. When you hear comparisons of the United States to other countries, it is generally not an apples to apples comparison. The state of Missouri has one of the most rigorous standardized test for our kids out of all 50 states.
Note from Mrs. Taylor!
Hi Families,
I can't believe it's almost Thanksgiving! This year seems to be flying by! My daughter has been coming home from school with excitement to share all the things that they have been learning about Thanksgiving in class. She has continued each night at dinner to share who she is thankful for in her life. I wanted to let you know that I am truly thankful that I get to work with your children every day. I am filled with appreciation because, I get to come to a WONDERFUL place like Sunset Valley! THANK YOU for all you do to help support our staff! SVE is THANKFUL for YOU! :)
BIST Tip: It’s a Problem in my Life
Do you ever find yourself trying to solve your child’s problem rather than teach them how to solve their own problems? If so, you’re not alone. It’s easy to make excuses for repeated misbehaviors rather than look at why they occur. Kids need to get to this level before they can truly change their misbehavior. Be patient, this step of accountability does not happen overnight!
