Happy New Year
It seems we are all rested and ready to get back to work. I know the break helped me to be rested and ready. The children have been working hard on numerous assignments and tests since the beginning of the new year. Happy 2013!
Can you believe it is the middle of the second trimester? Progress reports go home January 17, and Yellow Ribbon Week is next week. During yellow ribbon week, we discuss violence prevention. January is also the time for our Pancake Breakfast at the Dads' Club. Be sure to be there January 26, 2013.
Reading is an important daily homework activity. Please help your child to find books to read. You can order from the book orders. I will be sending book orders Thursday, January 17. If you would like to order, please do so online or send the paper form and money by Thursday, January 24. You can also find quality books at the Glendale Public Library.
Please see below for more information on curriculum and important events.

Curriculum Update
Language Arts: We are continuing to practice reading nonfiction texts. Soon we will be reading the story Summer of Fire. We will continue to practice spelling and vocabulary with tests on alternate weeks. The next spelling test is Thursday, January 24. This trimester we continue to revise and edit their stories. Ask to see your child's pink story. Your child should be reading to work on their second trimester AR goal. Please ask your child about his or her progress.
Mathematics: Unit 5 is measurement and geometry. It includes measuring and drawing angles, finding angle measures using reasoning (geometry, oh my!), coordinate geometry, parallel lines and angle relationships, and parallelograms. Please remind your child that even though the fraction unit is over, we will not ever stop working with fractions. We will continue to work with fractions through various operations throughout the year.
Science: Sixth grade science is all about Earth Science. The next chapter is Plate Tectonics and Earth's Structure. I have started to use edcanvas.com for some of my science lessons. Students can access these lessons for review from the homework website listed above.
Social Studies: Sixth Grade history is all about ancient civilizations. Ask your child about his or her Egypt project, when it is due and what is the subject.
