Thornhill Elementary PFC Newsletter

Volume 26, Issue 28, March 12, 2019

From the PFC President

It's more than a month away, but it's never too early to start thinking about one of the biggest events of every Thornhill school year… The annual Thornhill Lavinrac.

What's a Lavinrac, you may ask? Well, Lavinrac is Carnival spelled backwards. And no matter how you spell it, the Spring Carnival is one of the most popular events of the year. This year's carnival is set for Saturday, April 27, so mark you calendars now.

Be sure to thank the amazing Marya Edgar for organizing this year's event, and please lend her a hand—information on volunteers needed is below. It’s a ton of fun to take a shift at a booth, help students make posters and more, so please sign up.

This is the kind of event that helps build and connect our community, and reminds us of how strong our community can be.

Spring Carnival Details!

Our annual Spring Carnival will be on Saturday, April 27th from 10am-3pm. This year we’re going back to a TRADITIONAL CARNIVAL!

Thornhill families and friends, as well as future students and Montclair neighbors, are all welcome to attend this fun event featuring classic carnival games, awesome prizes, face painting, spin art, jumpy house, cake walk, dunk tank, lunch BBQ by the Dads Club and snacks including popcorn and cotton candy.

Step Right Up and Try Your Luck (At Coordinating Your Class Carnival Booth)!

We need parents from every class to step up and take on this fun volunteer role! It’s not a big time commitment—your class’s game is already decided.

Here’s what it takes to be Class Booth Coordinator:

  • Find parents to work one-hour shifts at your class booth
  • Set up and tear down your class booth
  • Help students create a new banner or poster (if needed)
  • Arrange for sweets for the cake walk
  • Help promote additional carnival staffing as needed (i.e. face painting, food, first aid station, etc.)

If you are interested please email me at or

Thank you!

Dads Clubs Team Up for Moms’ Day Celebration

The Dads Clubs from Montclair Elementary and Thornhill Elementary are co-hosting a special Mother’s Day Weekend Chili Cook-Off Fundraiser on Saturday, May 11, 2019 from 11am – 2pm at Roberts Regional Recreation Area (10570 Skyline Blvd, Oakland, CA, 94611). Share a meal, meet new families, celebrate Mother’s Day, and experience the best chili offerings provided by select teams from Thornhill and Montclair.

Handcrafted artisan chili will be available for tastings (meat, vegetarian, spicy, non-spicy) along with hot dogs for the non-chili eaters. Tickets are $15 (adult)/$10 (children 12 and under) and include samples of all the chili. Adult drink tickets for craft beer and wine are sold separately for $5/beverage.

The Dads Clubs are seeking teams from each school (5 from Montclair; 3 from Thornhill) to showcase their best chili! If you think you have what it takes to “wow” the big crowds and can provide enough delicious samples, please inquire directly with Mark Lecker at “People’s Choice” and “Kid’s Choice” will be awarded onsite at the event. In addition to chili teams, the Dads Clubs are looking for volunteers to collect money, hand out tickets, count ballots, etc. A Signup Genius sheet will be going out soon--stay tuned.

To purchase tickets in advance, please visit Eventbrite. Tickets can also be purchased upon entry to the event.

Make a day out of it! Join (or watch) the Thunder-a-thon Lawn Game Tourney starting at 10am, right there at Roberts Regional Park!
