Official School Updates

Dear Parents,

Due to the school closures related to Hurricane Ida, we have had to make a few adjustments to the school calendar to ensure that we meet the Louisiana Department of Education required seat-time for students.

As a result, the following changes are being made to the school calendar:

  1. Interim reports which were scheduled to go out on Thursday, September 16 will be issued on September 23

  2. Open house will take place on September 22 (PreK-3rd grade) and September 23 (4th – 7th grade) - more details to follow

  3. October 8 was a 1⁄2 day of school; it is now a full day of school and still the end of the first quarter (No AM/PM bus service)

  4. October 22 and 25 were off days for the fair; they are both now full days of school.

  5. November 8 was a Day of Reflection for faculty; it is now a full day of school.

  6. December 17 was a 1⁄2 day of school; it is now a full day of school (No PM bus service).

Our PTO is in the process of rescheduling our Boosterthon, and will provide more details as they become available.

Special thanks to our Fr. Ed, Fr, Dan, the SMM Men’s Club, and our own maintenance team of Mr. Jim Agar, Mr. Jimmy Slayton, and Mr. Kenny Oster for their hard work in getting our campus ready for us to return to school this Monday.

And please join me in congratulating Mrs. Megan Walker and her husband as they welcome a new baby girl into their family earlier this morning. While Mrs. Walker is on maternity leave, Mrs. Jen Rice will be covering her classes. Mrs. Rice’s email is

As it was last year, please call the office and/or contact Gay Knock at immediately if your child or member of your household tests positive for the Corona Virus. She is our COVID representative and communicates with the Louisiana Department of Health on a regular basis. She will get direction from the LDOH regarding protocols and quarantine restrictions.

If you or your child exhibits COVID symptoms (fever, cold/flu-like symptoms, congestion, headaches, body aches, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, etc), please do NOT send your child to school until you have contacted Gay. Remember, the school policy is that you must keep children home for 48 hours until they are fever free without fever reducing medication.

Regarding quarantine guidelines & contact tracing: We are following the guidelines set forth by the LDH. When a student has tested positive, we will determine to the best of our ability those students who have been in direct, close contact with the positive student. This means that not everyone in the classroom need be quarantined. We also look at other possible areas of contact such as the bus, enrichment classes, cafeteria, etc.

We know that quarantining one or more students in a family causes disruption and stress. That is definitely not our intent. But if just one of our students becomes seriously ill from this dreadful virus and we have not done our very best to protect him/her, we would be devastated. My God bless our SMM students and families.

Fun Run Postponed but NOT Cancelled

The SMM Olympic Charger Fun Run is the only major fund raiser for the PTO this school year. The PTO hopes to raise enough money to purchase new playground equipment, which is badly needed, and water filling stations. Please support this exciting fund raising event and share with your friends and families.

The PTO Board will have a virtual meeting on either Monday or Tuesday to discuss when we will kick start our Fun Run. The Boosterthon team has been very accommodating to our school and communities’ change in need. More information on the actual event day and class and teacher competitions to follow.
