ISD 709 School News for Families
Tuesday April 24, 2018 – Seated by 8:50AM
● Students at Denfeld and Duluth East: 9th, 10th, and 12th grade students will not attend school on April 24 in order to accommodate the test. 11th grade students will attend school and follow a special test day schedule.
● Students attending AEO, ALC and Residential Programs: 9th, 10th, and 12th Grade students will attend school as usual on April 24. 11th Grade students participating in the test should contact their guidance counselor or school principal to make arrangements.
● 2018 ACTion Day: Students not attending school have the option of volunteering with a community agency through the United Way. These volunteer opportunities are not school sponsored so students will need to manage their own transportation and other logistics. Students interested in volunteering can sign up here.

Spring Fever at Myers-Wilkins
Recent snow boosted excitement for school gardens at Myers-Wilkins Elementary. During the school's Cabin Fever Family Event, Spring at Last Greenhouse helped families celebrate with veggie and flower starts, plus tomato and kohlrabi (Duluth Community Garden Vegetable of the Year) seed planting with Healthy Northland Farm to School. Thanks to all for their support!
2018 National Autism Awareness Month
The event promotes autism awareness, inclusion and self-determination for all, and assuring that each person with ASD is provided the opportunity to achieve the highest possible quality of life.
We want to get one step closer to a society where those with Autism Spectrum Disorders are truly valued for their unique talents and gifts. The following links share information about Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and early identification and intervention. Please note that our Region 3 Low Incidence Facilitator is currently Dena Hagen.
During their spring trip, members of the Denfeld Band stopped at the famous Sun Studio in Memphis,TN and had a chance to do some recording (catch the Million Dollar Quartet in the background).
Sun Studio is associated with musical legends and genres of the 50’s from B.B. King and Elvis Presley to Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis; from Blues and Gospel to Country and Rock’n'roll.
The Daredevils robotics team received the 2018 Entrepreneurship Award at the FIRST Robotics North Star Regional competition in Minneapolis. This award is given to the team that has developed the framework for a comprehensive business plan to scope, manage, and achieve team objectives. Congratulations, Daredevils!

Congdon Park Elementary teams recently participated in the Regional Destination Imagination Tournament:
Rainbow Narwhals took 1st Place and Creative is the New Cool took 2nd Place for Scientific Challenge. Both teams advance to the State DI Competition. Tremendous T-Texes took 1st Place in the Technology Challenge, advancing to State, with 2nd Place awarded to Congdon SSSlavages. Congdon Cougar Kids earned 2nd Place for the Engineering Challenge.
Autumn Zierman and Abby Longnaker earned medals at a recent speech tournament in St. Cloud, MN. Students gained confidence and skills they can use in the upcoming Section tournament!
Andrea Sas (left, on riser) received a Silver Medal in the SkillsUSA State Architectural Drafting competition in Bloomington, MN. Andrea is a State Officer, she will be attending the National SkillsUSA Conference in Lousville, KY as a voting delegate June.
Laura MacArthur and Myers Wilkins Elementary schools hosted performances of "Fidgety Fairy Tales.” The theater group, organized through the Minnesota Association for Children's Mental Health, presents familiar fairy tales as musical theatre and use gentle humor, music, and performance to raise awareness about children’s mental health. The production provides accurate information, dispels myths and helps people respond with compassion, understanding and support. Thank you, Essentia Health, for providing financial support to make this opportunity possible.
Students from the Duluth East High School Orchestra visited Congdon Park Elementary to help teach third graders about instruments, sound pitch, duration and volume. Love seeing the big kids help little kids!
Congratulations to Jamison Dietlan and Beau Giddings, they set new City Records at the final middle school swim meet for this year.
Beau Giddings: 100 IM 59.07; 50 Butterfly 26.09. Beau broke records set by John Long in 1977.

What: Revel with the Daredevils Pasta Dinner, Bake Sale, Silent Auction.
When: April 17th, 5-8pm
Where: Duluth East High School, 301 N 40th Ave East
$5 Children under 10/$10 per person/$25 per Family
There will be a pasta dinner, a bake sale, a silent auction, and LEGO robotics! The Daredevils will be showing their robots at this event and they will be letting people drive the robots that the students built.The purpose of this fundraiser is to help the Daredevils raise money for their trip to the FIRST World Championships on April 25th-28th. All donations help. This fundraiser will be open to the public so all are welcome!
The Denfeld Theater Department proudly presents Alan Haehnel's hysterical full length comedy, Loving Lives.
April 26th–28th at 7:00 PM
Tickets are sold at the door of the Denfeld Auditorium; $10 General Admission, Children under 10 pay their age.
It’s 1948 and Loving Lives, the daily radio soap opera, is on the air. But love, jealousy and the snow might just take this show off the airwaves permanently.

Autism Walk Northland is set for Sunday, April 22nd 2018 at Hermantown High School indoor track with check in starting at 9:00 AM. The walk helps raise money for area schools and other organizations supporting students with autism. There's face painting, music, kids activities, free snacks and an online auction. Come walk for a wonderful cause or think about making a donation.
