Weekly Update

Week of May 3rd - Distance Learning

Principal's Corner

Dear OLPH Families,

The month of May is very special to us, this week would have marked our May Crowning Prayer Service. As I mentioned in a previous update, It's beautiful prayer services like these that kept me at OLPH. Students from each grade level would have processed into the church with flowers, and a male and female representative from each class would have represented our school to assist in crowning our Blessed Mother. If you are unfamiliar with this tradition I have added a brief explanation.

“May Crowning” is a traditional Catholic ritual that occurs in the month of May and it recognizes Mary as Queen of heaven and earth. Since medieval times, there has been a correlation between Mary and the month of May. May is considered the season of the beginning of new life. “May Crowning” marks a new spiritual season. Our Mary, Queen of heaven and earth, lifted us right out of the last long, cold days of winter and firmly planted our hearts in the warm and promising soil of spring.

During the Holy Mass on May Crowning day, a wreath of flowers and herbs is placed on the statue of Mary. The act of crowning is rooted in the view of Mary as the Queen of Heaven. The event is of particular significance as it relates to the Champion Shrine history because, when Our Lady appeared to the young Belgian immigrant woman, Adele Brise, in 1859, she identified herself as the “Queen of Heaven.”

Although we are not together for this tradition I urge you to pray with your children. We miss our prayer services, but I definitely want our students to be reminded of the amazing faith filled school you chose to send them to.To assist I have provided a prayer to follow. (attachment below)

Thank You for Years of Dedication to OLPH Preschool!

Many of us know our beloved Preschool Director Margarita Rivera. She has dedicated her time and talent to OLPH and unfortunately due to COVID-19 she took an early retirement. Ms. Margaret is kind, warm, loving and devoted to all of our preschool students. Her Catholic faith was important to her and educating our preschool students in their faith held great importance to her as well. She will be missed and we will definitely honor her as soon as restrictions are lifted. If you wish to join a retirement committee for Ms. Margaret, please email acovarrubias@olphindio.net.

We love you and thank you Ms. Margaret.
