Khubuz is a traditional flatbread ending with a serving of dark, sweet tea.
Religion
Muslims pray five times a day and fast (don't eat or drink) in the month of Ramadan.
The Christian population is small.
Christians dress in everyday street clothes and don't cover their heads Muslims cover their heads with abayas and dress in long dresses.
Music, dance, and art
Maqam songs are based on Arabic poetry and you play it slowly.
Dance is very important in Iraq the hacha'a is a popular dance among Arabs.
Painters in Baghdad became famous for their small, colorful paintings called miniature paintings.
Tradition and holidays
Mawlid al-Nabi celebrates the birth of Muhammad.
Traditionally, Kurds follow a solar calendar called shamsi.
According to the shamsi, the new year begins at the time of the spring equinox.
Kurdish girls wear long dresses that are brightly colored Kurdish boys wear coats that are embroided with silver or gold.
Sports
Football and soccer are Iraqis common sports.
The team name is Lions of Mesopotamia.
Their head coach is Yahya Alwan.
Intresting facts
National animal is a goat.
The hero Gilgamesh is now in lots of books in Iraq he is a legendary king in the city of Uruk.
Iraq is in the Middle East.
It is about as large as California.
Northern Iraq has mountains and foothills southern Iraq has deserts and valleys.
Their houses are either made of mud or clay.
The national symbol is a black and gold eagle carrying a shield that looks like their flag.
Flag
Written in green on the white band is the Arabic phrase Allahu Akbar, which translates as God Is Great.
Language
The Aramaic language has fewer consonants then Arabic, so during the 7th century new Arabic letters were created by adding dots to existing letters in order to avoid ambiguities.
Animals
Iraq is a country with lots of animals.
Most of them are wild.
The national bird is the golden eagle.
The national animal is a lion.
