Pierce Downer This Week
Week of November 29-December 3
Weekly Update
Pierce Downer Families-
We are officially in December! While the temperatures are all over the place, we are really heating up over at Pierce Downer. Students will be receiving their report cards next Thursday. These report cards should come home in an envelope for you to review.
We are excited for the PD Student Council Winter Wonderland happening Saturday, December 11th. If you have not sent in the donation for the event, please remember to send that in as soon as possible.
In this week's newsletter, we are excited to feature our latest PD Cup recipient, the Panthers of the Month for November, details for the Reading Games, and information regarding the 40th Annual DG58 Science Fair.
We will continue to sell smencils all through next week. Now that we have been able to give each student the opportunity to purchase, students are able to buy additional scents at any time.
District 58 invites families to voluntarily share an electronic image of their child’s vaccination card with their building’s health office. Providing proof of vaccination is not required. However, current CDC guidance excuses fully vaccinated individuals from having to quarantine unless symptomatic.
By sharing a copy of your child’s card, if your child is a close contact, having the vaccination card on hand will expedite the school’s investigation process. Copies of proof of vaccination will be kept in each student’s individual health file and treated in the same way as all health records. Please feel free to send a picture of your child's COVID vaccination card to your school nurse!
Please remember the doors open each morning at 8:10 and class begins at 8:15. You may have noticed (or heard) that we have brought some of our bells back! We have bells that ring at 8:10am for the doors opening, 11:30 to begin lunch/recess, 12:10 for the end of lunch and recess, and 3:00pm for dismissal.
As always, please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns via email LWagner@DG58.org or call 630-719-5860.
We are PD!

Voluntary COVID Testing Program Signup
District 58 encourages families to consider signing up for free PCR COVID-19 testing for District 58 students. Registration for this optional testing program is open and our program is actively underway.
Families can select from any or all of three types of testing services including:
Weekly screening testing (routine testing)
Symptomatic testing (testing when a student or staff member develops symptoms at school)
Test-to-Stay (testing for situations in which a student has been identified as a close contact)
Test-to-Stay, an IDPH-endorsed process that allows a close contact to remain in school with regular antigen testing, will begin next week. Please see the district communication regarding the IDPH's guidance regarding when Test-to-Stay can be implemented in schools.
The student sign up for our school can be found below.
Reading Games are Back!
Registration for The Reading Games is open now through Jan. 14! This fun reading competition will take place on Saturday, April 23 at O'Neill Middle School, and it is open to District 58 students in grades 3-8. Students read books from one of two book lists, then face other teams to answer questions about the books they've read. It is a great opportunity for kids to read new books and discuss them with friends. Teams are made up of five to eight students, and may include students from different grades and schools. However, due to space limitations, participation in The Reading Games is limited only to District 58 students. Teams will read books and be asked questions from Book List 1 (third-fourth grades) or Book List 2 (fifth-eighth grades).
Team Registration
Completing this form reserves a spot for your team to compete on Saturday, April 23, 2022. You do not need to identify the students who will be on your team for this registration, so there is time to finalize the team members. In February or March 2022, you will be asked to provide a team name and the contact information for a team volunteer (16 years or older) to participate in one of many roles to run the event.
2022 Reading Games: Team Registration Form
Individual Registration
If you have a child who would like to participate but does not have a team, you may request a spot using the individual registration form. Individual student registration closes on Jan. 14, 2022. Although we cannot guarantee a spot on a team, we will do our very best to match children to existing teams, or to assist you in creating a new team, by Feb. 1, 2022.
