Message From the Principal's Desk
We remain committed to keeping your children safe while at Unity. Please continue to respect and follow some very important guidelines:
- Breakfast begins at 8 am. If your child has not had breakfast, you may drop them off at this time. I am often out front with students and they are here prior to 8:25 am and tell me they are not hungry. Please do not drop off your child prior to 8:25 am if they are not going to eat. We simply lack the ability to safely supervise our students out front prior to that time.
- Don't forget your mask! We have a supply of one-time-use masks, but they are rapidly getting used up. Make an investment in a few masks and pack a few in backpacks. If your child needs a washable mask please let the front office know.
- Our staggered release has worked quite well so far. Thank you for being here at 2:25 on Mondays and 3:25 on Tuesday - Friday.
As always, I'm committed to keeping your child safe and prioritizing their reading and math growth. If there is anything I can do to help you or your family in those goals please reach out. Go Team U!

Books Online
Books online!
Looking for something for your student to read at home. Don’t have time to get to the public library---READ AN e-BOOK! Your child can access our MackinVia e-book resources (free access provided by the Iowa AEA’s) by accessing their Clever account from home. If you have Internet access, your student can go to http://student.siouxcityschools.org this will take them to Clever where they can enter their username and password (or scan their QR code if that is what they use to login to Clever). Once in their Clever account, scroll down the page and click on the MackinVia button.
Click on MackinVia –this will give your child(ren) access to over 5,000 books (some e-books, some audiobooks) for grades K-12. You can search by topic and then use the limiters/filters on the left hand side to limit books by reading level or even language, especially Spanish language materials. Once you find a title you like, you can click on the “open now” button on the right to open the book and read it. If you choose “checkout” it goes into the students backpack (shown next to their name and they have access to it for a full week.
Happy Reading!

Dealing with Power Struggles
Power is a major issue between children and adults. While still very young, some kids realize they don’t have much control over anything. A toddler unconsciously thinks, “I’m the smallest, they tell me what to do, and I don’t get to make decisions. I need to find a way to get some control.” Then, winning the power struggle becomes all-important—more important than making decisions.
When we offer kids a choice, instead of making a demand, no power struggle ever begins. When we make a demand, we own the wise choice, leaving the child with only one way to win the power struggle—by making a foolish choice. Given a range of choices, a child has endless opportunities to choose wisely.

News from the Nurse
Students who exhibit the following symptoms will be sent to the Caring Room at Unity during school hours:
1. Fever ( at least 100.4° F)
2. Chills
3. Cough
4. Shortness of Breath
5. Fatigue
6. Muscle or Body Aches
7. Headache
8. New Loss of Taste or Smell
9. Sore Throat
10. Congestion or Runny Nose
11. Nausea or Vomiting
12. Diarrhea
If a student is sent home with Covid symptoms, the student will remain home for 10 days. If the student is tested and has a negative Covid test result, they may return prior to the 10-day quarantine. If the student visits a doctor, the student may return to school prior to the 10-day quarantine if they have an alternate diagnosis. The school office will need to know what the diagnosis is (i.e. strep throat, allergies,). If the note says, “The student can return to school” without an alternate diagnosis, we are not accepting this and the student will remain out of school for 10 days. It is the recommendation of the Iowa Department of Public Health to require an alternate diagnosis to return to school.

We encourage you to take advantage of Let’s Talk!, our 24/7 online submission site. Reach out with your ideas, questions, concerns, and praise. Communication and Preparedness
Student and staff safety is of paramount importance in the Sioux City Community School District. For this reason, the District exercises a host of crisis prevention and planning tactics. Should an emergency occur, the school notifies you through our Blackboard phone system. In an emergency, the system calls every phone number associated with your child in order to reach you. The message will give you details about the emergency and provide directions on when/where to pick up your child if the normal school day is altered. Learn more about school safety.
