Counselor's Corner
Piney Point Families,
During the month of January, our students will be learning about the character trait, COOPERATION. They are learning that cooperation means:
• Work together to achieve a goal
• Listen, share, and encourage
• Compromise – give and take
Checkout my newsletter on Cooperation for additional resources. My Bitmoji page is also always a resource for you as well.

Math Ideas at Home
This month, choose two or three of the following strategies to help increase your child's understanding of math skills:
Primary (K-2)
- Talk about how many bowls/utensils to put out for dinner
- Fold dinner napkins into different shapes
- Count similar items as you put away groceries
- Have your child assist you with weighing fresh produce at the grocery store. Older children can calculate prices by multiplying the price per pound by the number of pounds weighed.
- Have your child help you measure simple ingredients as you are preparing meals or baking
- For students who are ready to be challenged, try one of the intermediate activities below.
- Monitor your child's daily work from school and ask them questions about content and strategies they are using.
Intermediate (2-5)
- Try variations of the primary activities making them a bit more challenging for older children.
- Dice and Money Activity: Each person rolls a die and gets that number of coins (can vary between coins to make it more challenging). Encourage students to exchange money to have the fewest coins in their possession. For example, if you start with pennies, encourage students as they collect 5 pennies, to exchange for a nickel, then 2 nickels for 1 dime, etc.
- Newspaper/Magazines Activity: Have students find numbers in print. They can cut out and arrange least to greatest or greatest to least and glue to paper. Challenge students to find the highest value number or they can combine numbers and create.
- Keep empty containers and write prices on them. Play Store by encouraging students to add amounts for a combination of different containers. Have students practice making change based on their buying choices.
- Monitor your child's daily work from school and ask them questions about content and strategies they are using.

COVID-19 Processes
St. Mary's County Public Schools COVID-19 protocols for Staff and Students are based upon MDH and MSDE Guidance.
When Will My Child Be Sent Home From School Related to COVID?
The school nurse follows the MDH and MSDE Guidance when seeing students in the health suite with COVID-19 symptoms. As outlined in the document, COVID-19 symptoms are any ONE of the following:
fever of 100.4 F or higher
sore throat
cough
difficulty breathing
diarrhea
vomiting
new onset of severe headache (especially with fever)
new loss of taste or smell
When Should I Keep My Child Home From School?
Do not send your child to school if your child is experiencing ANY signs/symptoms of illness. If your child required fever-reducing medication within the past 24 hours to maintain a normal body temperature, your child should NOT be in school.
Please contact Nurse Erica if you have any questions.
Please communicate with the school when your child is absent.
