Principal's Message

Dear Terra Linda Families,

We had a fun end to our week last week with the Tiger Trot. A big thank you to Emily Struthers and the Tiger Trot committee for making the Tiger Trot so much fun! We appreciate all of their time and effort. Thank you to committee members Jennifer Collett, Penny Galvin, Mai-Han Shultz, and Becky Seppala. Thank you to our entire Terra Linda community for helping our students to raise money to support our school!

This week we have Parent-Teacher Conferences. If you need any help finding a time that works for your family, please call our office. Teachers are looking forward to chatting with you!

Below I've included some tips about using Dreambox at home. Please read through them carefully so your students have the best experience possible with Dreambox.

Finally, I've added some information about becoming a substitute, either at Terra Linda or at other BSD schools as well. We would love some additional help to cover staff absences. Thanks for considering!

Parent-Teacher Conference Sign-Up Reminder

If you haven't yet signed up for a conference, please call our office to reserve a time. We have turned off access to the ParentSquare sign-up option, but our office staff can still schedule a time for you. You can still cancel your conference time, if needed, but you will need to call us to select a new day/time.

If you signed up for a conference on a phone, you will see a "star" icon next to the day and time you selected.

If you signed up for a conference on a laptop or computer, you will see a notification in ParentSquare with the day & time of your conference.

If you forgot what day and time you selected, we can look that up for you. Just call our office.


Dreambox provides students with wonderful visual models of different math concepts. It also supports the development of mental math strategies. Dreambox also adjusts the tasks it gives to each student based on how they answer each question. Therefore, it's important that grown-ups don't provide help with entering the correct answers; otherwise, Dreambox will provide harder problems that could cause your child a lot of frustration. When students enter wrong answers, Dreambox will adjust the level of problems and/or the type of problems to help build the skills the student needs to answer correctly in the future. If your child is struggling with a particular problem, encourage them to make their best guess, even if it is wrong. Then celebrate with your child. Mistakes are where we learn the most!

Here are a few tips when supporting your students on Dreambox:

  • Celebrate mistakes
  • Ask questions if your child is stuck: What is the problem asking you to do? What have you tried? Have you clicked on all of the options? What do you think the answer could be? Go ahead and enter that.
  • Avoid providing paper & pencil to solve problems. All problems should be able to be solved using mental math strategies. If you need paper, it's probably too hard. And it's okay to answer incorrectly so Dreambox will adjust to an easier problem.

Dreambox is designed to provide students with productive struggle: not too hard but not too easy. If you've provided help to your child and feel like the math problems are now too difficult, contact your child's teacher. We can reset the grade level if needed.

The community-wide worker shortage is making it difficult to find substitutes when our staff are unable to come to work. If you or anyone you know is interested in working for BSD as a substitute, please encourage them to apply to be a Classified Substitute. Click here for more information and to apply. Options School Info Night on Zoom for Terra Linda Families Wednesday, October 27 at 6:30pm

On Wednesday, October 27 at the start of the PTC meeting on Zoom, Taryn Wenz, our school counselor, will provide an overview of the different Middle School Options. 5th grade families are encouraged to attend so you know which Middle School Options Open Houses you'd like to attend this fall, if any. 4th grade families (or anyone from other grades) are also welcome to attend if you'd like to plan ahead.

Options Applications are due by 4:00pm on Friday, December 10, 2021, and each student can only apply to one Option School per year.

5th grade students will receive similar information during a presentation in their class this week.

New Sock Drive

Please help to support our community during the Week of October 25 by donating new socks to our sock drive! We will have bins in our lobby to collect new socks. Socks will be donated to BSD's Clothes for Kids and With Love Oregon. As you may know, donation sites don’t accept used socks, and new socks are one of the top clothing items needed. We plan to make this an annual tradition to support our broader community!

Scholastic Book Fair is Coming!

Students will be able to visit the Book Fair twice between Tuesday, October 26th and Friday, October 29th during the STEAM and Library specials.

The Book Fair will also be available online!


  • Terra Linda will receive 50% of all sales in Scholastic Dollars to buy books for the school!

  • Only students can shop at school. You can send them with cash, or you can use Scholastic's eWallet

  • You can shop with your student online. See the flyer for details. The online fair runs from October 25 through November 7.

COVID-19 Once a Week Screening - Update

You are welcome to enroll in this program anytime. You can also unenroll anytime by contacting us at Terra Linda.

Weekly Schedule

  • At Terra Linda, we will send home test kits on Fridays. You will receive your first set of at-home tests on Friday, October 29.
  • Students need to return tests to their teacher on Mondays. We will collect the first set of tests on Monday, November 1.


The test is done with saliva and needs to be collected first thing in the morning before eating, drinking or brushing teeth. Send samples to school with your student. If your student is absent on the Friday or the Monday, they will just miss participating for that week. If a student forgets to bring the sample, you can bring it to school. The sample needs to arrive by 9:45 to be included in the testing program that week. After 9:45am, there is no guarantee that it will be included. Samples are picked up by OHSU staff and we cannot ask them to wait.

We will send home video instructions for how to collect saliva samples next week.

October is Filipino/a/x American History Month (Repeat)

From the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS): Filipino Americans are the second-largest Asian American group in the nation. The celebration of Filipino American History Month in October commemorates the first recorded presence of Filipinos in the continental United States, which occurred on October 18, 1587, when “Luzones Indios” came ashore from the Spanish galleon Nuestra Senora de Esperanza and landed at what is now Morro Bay, California. In 2009, U.S. Congress recognized October as Filipino American History Month in the United States. Various states, counties, and cities in the U.S. have established proclamations and resolutions declaring observance of Filipino American History Month.

Peruse these resources from the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco and from FANHS in Seattle for ideas about how you can acknowledge, celebrate and elevate the voices of our local and national Filipino/a/x community.

After School Opportunity (Repeat)

Play.Fit.Fun is offering after school activities on Tuesdays from 3:00-4:00pm. It will start as soon as the minimum number of registered students is reached.

If you register, you need to call the office and let us know that your child's Going Home Plan will change on Tuesdays to go to Play.Fit.Fun. Students will gather with Play.Fit.Fun staff near our lobby. The activities will happen under the covered play area near our Library at the north end of our building. You can pick them up at 4:00 by parking in the staff parking lot near the THPRD Park and waiting on the sidewalk near the library.

COVID 19 Response for Students (Repeat)

Please take a look at the flowchart below showing the process that our school nurses and principals follow to determine who will need to be isolated or quarantined. As you can see, it's a very complex process! This is a repeat of information sent out by Community Involvement on Friday, but we wanted to be sure you read through it. Too Sick for School? (Repeat)

Parents/guardians should perform a daily health evaluation before sending students to school. If a student is exhibiting a fever, cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, a new loss of taste or smell or any of the symptoms on our Too Sick for School - Keep Ill Students Out of School flyer, the student should stay home.

For more information, you can also visit the Washington County Health & Human Services Department School Exclusion webpage for guidance, rules and communicable disease facts.

Below are some guidelines to help you make the decision about when to keep your child home from school. The recommendations are based on the guidelines provided by the Communicable Disease Program of the Washington County Department of Health and Human Services. They were developed to help prevent the spread of potentially contagious disease.

  • Fever: With fever greater than 100.4° F; student may return when fever-free for 24 hours (WITHOUT use of fever-reducing medicine).
  • Vomiting/Diarrhea: Any unexplained vomiting episode. May return 48 hours after last episode. Diarrhea equals three or more unexplained episodes of watery or loose stools in 24 hours OR sudden onset of loose stools. May return 48 hours after last episode.
  • Cough: Serious, sustained coughing, shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing.
  • Rash: Any new rash accompanied by a fever. May return after rash goes away or clearance given by a health care provider.
  • Skin Lesions/Sores: Drainage from a sore that cannot be contained within a bandage OR sores are increasing in size OR new sores are developing day-to-day.
  • Other: Symptoms that prevent the student from active participation in usual school activities OR student is requiring more care than school can safely provide.

Home is the best place for a child who is ill. If your child is sick with a diagnosed communicable disease, please notify the school as soon as possible. This notification will greatly assist others who, due to medical reasons and/or treatments, have weakened immune systems and may require immediate and specialized care.

Volunteers Needed (Repeat)

Breakfast & Lunch

We are looking for volunteers to help with Breakfast and Lunch. Duties will include assisting in staff in the Kitchen while students select their meal items or working with staff in the cafeteria. Volunteer opportunities available all school days from 8:10-8:40 and 10:30-1:00.

For All Volunteers

Volunteers must be approved through the BSD volunteer system. Beginning October 18, all volunteers must be fully vaccinated and provide proof of vaccination or have an approved exemption on file.

Club K After School Zone (Repeat)

Club K will be operating again at Terra Linda after school. If you're interested in registering, please go to their website for more information: www.clubkafterschool.com

They do not yet have enough students interested in morning care. If you're interested, please fill out the ParentSquare form that we sent out today. We will take all names of interested families and share with Club K. If we can get morning care started, you would then need to register with Club K.

Morning Care (if it is offered) would be available from 6:45am to 8:15am on school days. Cost for morning care would depend on the number of days needed.
