What is Tumblr? How do you use it?
Tumblr is a social networking site, like Facebook or Twitter, founded in 2007 by David Karp. Users on this site create a blog (URL.tumblr.com) where they can edit pages and blog text, video, audio, pictures, and links. You can follow other blogs, and other blogs can follow you (sort of like Twitter--there are Tumblr famous just like Twitter famous). Each user also has a private dashboard where they can view the people that they follow's posts.
What can you learn from Tumblr and other Social Media sites?
By using social networking sites, you can be exposed to many things. By using it the right way, you can learn a lot about people from different parts of the world, other people's opinions, and pop culture, Tumblr is a great way to express who you are, or what you love.
My blog (inspir3creat3.tumblr.com) was created in order for me to post things that I like, and talk about my opinions. Once every week, I made a book or movie review, talking about why I liked or did not like it. This helped my writing skills, by giving me practice writing about my opinions.
Writing online is something that is becoming more and more prominent with the growth of social media and blogging. Writing online is the both the same and different than writing on paper. On paper, everything is very formal and you cannot use sounds, pictures or .GIFS to display your point. But online, you cannot only use these resources, but it also has more of a laid back style. Notice how I used to acronym TFIOS (The Fault in Our Stars) on my book review below. This is OK online, but not so much on print.
Making this blog helped me learn a lot about social media. And how it really is the future. We use it for news, connecting with people we know, connecting with people we do not know, expressing what we love, and much more. It was also a great way for me to write on a social network or blog, which is where a large bulk of today's writing is. In today's technology age, it is a good life skill to know how to effectively use social media and the internet to write, and since I want to be a writer, it is good practice.
