Highlights from Second Grade

The Student Council sponsored Disney Day in honor of Walt Disney who was born on December 5th, in Chicago. Students were encouraged to wear their Disney apparel. We watched a video of Walt Disney and learned that he loved drawing and animation. His first animation was a film called "Steamboat Willie". It was then that he introduced Mickey Mouse who we all know is the mascot of The Walt Disney Company. Through the video students got to experience the "Magic" behind the genius, Walt Disney.

Literacy

In Superkids we finished Unit 3. We will have our end of the unit test on Monday of next week. The lessons this week focused on the soft sound for 'c' (as in nice) and the soft sound for 'g' (as in giraffe). We have also had lessons on sequencing with time order words and editing in writing. Students still need reminders to start sentences with a capital letter and end with a punctuation mark. Please make sure they are doing this at home whenever they do some writing.

In our Book Club this week we read Mercy Watson Fights Crime. There are other books in this series that your child might enjoy checking out at your local library. We will be reading another Mercy Watson book for our writing in our persuasive unit which will start after winter break.

TumbleBooks is a program available through the Woodridge Public Library. They are testing to see if the program is being used by our students. It will be available until at least March. Your student can find a link for this on our Goodrich home page under Resources-Students. Many of these books have AR quizzes. Click on the link below to read books (both Fiction and Non-fiction), play games, and have fun with TumbleBooks!

Math

In math this week we have been working on money. Most of the students could use some extra practice counting money. This can be done by dumping out some change for your child to count - quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies - or by going on IXL to practice. We will practice telling time next week.

Sections to practice in IXL are:

Money P.1, P.2, P.3, P.4, P.6, P.7, P.10, and P.14

Time Q.2, Q.3, Q.4, Q.5, Q.6, and Q.8

Star Student

Angelo was our STAR STUDENT this week. Angelo went to Hawaii this past summer and rode a boogie board in the Pacific Ocean. At home he likes to play outside and go for walks. Angelo said his mom makes the best pasta fagioli, his favorite food. When he grows up he wants to be a professional baseball player. Good job Angelo! Our next STAR is...Kendall.
