PWSLA
July 2017
President's Message
It seemed that every speaker, presentation, and meeting added to my list of "homework."
I know the summer is a time for reflecting on the practices of our past year and getting motivated for the year to come. However, I hope you have the time to relax, enjoy the wonders of your location, interests, and family & friends. I also hope you have the time for passion projects, work related or not.
Don't let your homework list get you down! Only carry on with those projects you find the joy in.

Attending AASL Conference in Phoenix, AZ
There are many reasons to not let distance stand in your way for this conference.
*In Phoenix, the new AASL Standards and Guidelines for School Libraries will be revealed. These replace the standards for 21st century learners which we have been using since 2007. As an attendee learning about the new standards you have the opportunity to support your fellow librarians as they learn about the new standards over the next year.
*At the conference, sessions are focused on many areas of school librarianship presented by library experts, including our own Linda Mitchell.
*As with any good conference, the author sessions are an opportunity to be the conduit between authors and your students. Mrs. Agee is a co-chair of the author sessions and has lined up some wonderful opportunities for learning from authors.
*Finally, absence from school is a concern for many. The timing of our local calendar and the Veterans' Day Holiday on Friday makes it possible to miss only one workday for the conference.
The conference is located in alternating years between west, central and eastern locations. If Phoenix seems a bit out of reach, perhaps a future conference is a worthy goal. Make a plan now to attend in the future.
November 14-16, 2019, Louisville KY
October 21-24, 2021, Salt Lake City UT
2023, Eastern location
October 16-19 2025, St. Louis MO
If you are interested in attending AASL in Phoenix, there are several local librarians attending and willing to answer your questions: Mrs. Schenell Agee, Beth Bowen, Debby Kelly, Linda Mitchell, and Carolyn Vibbert.
School Librarians as Learning Leaders
The infographic is simple and front/back. Resources have live links to videos and articles from a variety of sources (not just librarians talking about librarians).
These resources are available for you to share with your administrator and to use as a starting point for conversations.
