New Year's Resolutions for Kids and Families
Setting goals together can strengthen bonds between school-age children and parents.
New Year's Resolutions for Preschoolers (ages 3-5)
Establishing good habits with children while they are young sets them up to have good habits in adulthood. Making New Year’s resolutions is the perfect jumpstart. If your child is too young to fully grasp what resolutions are, be sure to explain it to them in a way that they’ll understand.
“Parents can start talking to children about goals by looking at goals the child has already accomplished,” says Mosback. Do they brush their teeth? Can they ride a bike? Have they learned how to tie their shoes? Can they swim? Find something they have already accomplished and talk to them about the steps it took to get there and how good they felt when they achieved that goal.”
- I will put away my toys after playing with them.
- I will share my toys with siblings and friends.
- I will use my words to express my feelings.
- I will go to bed without putting up a fight.
- I will always say thank you when someone gives or hands me something.
- I'll at least try a bite of new foods.
- I will practice writing my name every day.
New Year's Resolutions for Elementary/Tweens (ages 6-12)
For school-age children, making resolutions can be a fun learning experience. “The most important factor in creating goals is to not have the focus around something that is wrong or fixing a problem,” says Mosback. “The focus should be on adding more meaning and value to your life and on the process of reaching a goal. This mindset promotes more mindful decision-making, which allows the focus to remain in the present, rather than only the future outcomes.”
- I will eat more green vegetables with dinner.
- I will set myself a savings goal for my allowance.
- I will brush my teeth and floss twice a day.
- I will read for at least 30 minutes every day.
- I will find an activity or sport that I can do twice a week.
- When the weather is nice, I will play outside.
- I will limit playing video games to one or two hours per day.
- I will openly express my feelings and not be afraid to share them with others.
- I will make my bed every morning.
- I will keep my room and closet organized.
New Year's Resolutions for the Family:
Setting goals and resolutions that you can accomplish as a family will help strengthen bonds and hopefully create lasting memories. “Developing a family resolution can lead to more family-time and it can also teach kids the skill of teamwork,” says Mosback. “Developing and achieving a goal together as a family can be a bonding experience that draws the family closer as well.”
- We will have a family game night once a week.
- We will organize a monthly or weekly family volunteer activity that supports a group or charity of our choice.
- We will share our highs and lows of the day with each other every night.
- We will eat dinner together as a family every night.
- We will put away our devices during dinner.
- Every week, we will tell each other the qualities we admire most about them.
- We will participate in one physical activity together as a family once a week.
- We will make dinner together at least once a week.
- We will use less plastic; and be more eco-friendly.

MEDICATION AT SCHOOL
"Goose Creek CISD Board Policy FFAC (LOCAL) HEALTH REQUIREMENTS AND SERVICES:
MEDICAL TREATMENT SCHOOL NURSE – A school nurse has the right not to administer a medication if he or she feels it is not in the best interest of the student. If this decision is made, the nurse shall contact the parents or legal guardian and explain the rationale for the decision.
When administering the prescription medication, the medication must appear to be in the original container and to be properly labeled. If the parents cannot be contacted in a reasonable length of time, the nurse shall contact the doctor directly and administer the medication as instructed in writing by the doctor.
Parents may arrange to come to the school and give medication to the child or to have it taken on an alternate schedule where it is not administered at school.
Goose Creek School District Board Policy requires a written request from a parent before school personnel may administer medication to a student. In order to administer prescription medication to a student at school, the school office must have written permission from the parent or guardian and have the original label on the prescription bottle. The label shall include the student's name, the doctor's name, proper dosage to be given, name of medication, and the latest date the prescription was ordered. In some instances, written clarification from the physician may also be required. Parents requesting medication dosage that is different from the label on the prescription bottle must submit accompanying verification from the doctor. Non-prescription medicine must also be in the original container accompanied by a written permission slip from the parent or guardian.
All medication will be stored in the office area. No medication, including cough drops and other non-prescription drugs, will be kept in the classroom or by the child. Aspirin will not be given to students. Parents are responsible for picking up all medications at the end of the school year. The nurse has the right to dispose of all medications left on campus.
A student with asthma or severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) may be permitted to possess and use prescribed asthma or anaphylaxis medication at school or school-related events only if he or she has written authorization from his or her parent and a physician or other licensed health-care provider. The student must also demonstrate to his or her physician or health-care provider and to the school nurse the ability to use the prescribed medication including any device required to administer the medication. If the student has been prescribed asthma or anaphylaxis medication for use during the school day the student and parents should discuss this with the school nurse or principal.
In accordance with a student’s individual health plan for management of diabetes, a student with diabetes will be permitted to possess and use monitoring and treatment supplies and equipment while at school or at a school-related activity. See the school nurse or principal for information".
Information from the Superintendent regarding recent changes due to Covid
Here are a few reminders regarding recent changes due to Covid:
- Safety measures will continue to be implemented at all schools, including hand sanitizers and available Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). All facilities should follow safety protocols that have currently been in place since inception of the pandemic.
- Based on the most recent report from our local Houston medical experts, the Omicron variant of COVID is presenting to be extremely contagious, while also manifesting milder symptoms for many individuals. In line with CDC recommendations, Goose Creek will reduce the number of isolation days for those who test positive for COVID from 10 to 5 days. For individuals who are not showing any symptoms by the 5th day of isolation, he or she may return to school. Masks are strongly encouraged for an additional five days. Individuals who continue to show symptoms will be required to isolate for the full 10 days. If you have tested positive for COVID or are displaying symptoms, please notify your school nurse. At this time, while still listed optional, masks will continue to be strongly encouraged.
- Students who have had close contact or exposure with an individual who has tested positive for COVID should consider self-isolating for 5 days after the date of last contact as recommended by health authorities. Parents should monitor students for symptoms consistent with COVID and may also consider testing for COVID.
- Due to the dramatic rise of COVID in recent weeks, the district is reversing the decision to allow parents and family members on campus during lunches for the month of January. This decision will be reassessed at the end of January, as medical experts have proposed that this variant will likely disperse as quickly as it was initiated.
- Goose Creek CISD will continue to update the COVID dashboard each day. In addition, an email and text will be sent each Friday, reminding families and staff about current COVID numbers at each campus and district facility.
Cafeteria reminders for the 2nd semester
As a reminder, students are not allowed to take food/snacks outside of the cafeteria per GCCISD policy. Please make sure to bring and/or buy from the snack bar only what he/she can eat during lunch...no food will be able to be removed.
This includes allowing students to bring big bags of chips closed with a chip clip.
