Principal's Report
Remembrance Day Service
Friday of Week 5 marked our School Remembrance Day Ceremony. Our School Leaders did a fantastic job, working with Ms Gibson to create a ceremony, that each class watched in classes. Following this, we met as a school, under the COLA, to lay the wreath, with each class contributing something to enhance our memorial. I wanted to say how proud I was to see our students being so respectful, well behaved and reflective.
HPAG EXPO
Last Thursday Ms Strinic, Mrs Brown and I were invited to the High Potential Academically Gifted class at Waniora Public School to see what the attending students had been learning throughout the year. Families and staff were able to meet with the Year 5 students as they spoke about the great experience of the AG class. Students shared their creative thinking around the theme of “The Dome” and where they could take a simple concept and link their learning, based on interests. Following this sharing, students performed the Shakespeare play “Macbeth” with great humour and drama, to a large audience. Very impressive for students in Year 5! Feedback from families and students has been resoundingly positive and we look forward to again providing students with the opportunity to apply for this class in 2023.
Selective Schools 2024 Year 7 Online Applications
Online applications for Year 7 Selective Schools – 2024 – have now opened. Parents whose children will be in Year 6 in 2023, who are interested in their child sitting the selective high school placement test, are required to complete this process by Wednesday 16 November (that’s tomorrow!) 2022 at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7
Kindergarten Orientation
We have now finished our Kinder Orientation program, with everything going very smoothly throughout the transition. Well done to the many staff who were involved in ensuring the program was a success. Our 2023 Kindergarten students look like a lovely group and we are all looking forward to working with this next generation of Woonona Public School students.
School Enrolments 2023
In order to have accurate numbers for next year, it is important to notify the school office if you know your child will not be returning to Woonona Public School next year (other than Year 6). This information helps us to plan for 2023.
Alternatively, if you know of friends or family members who intend to enrol their children in Woonona Public School in 2023, please ask them to contact the school office to fill in the necessary documentation.
Book Fair
Last week was a huge week for our Library, with the Book Fair taking place. Led by Mrs Carroll and ably supported by Ms Hodson, over $12200 worth of book sales took place. What a wonderful fundraiser, but even more importantly, what a great way to create excitement about books and reading, for all of our students. The money that was raised will go directly back into our Library for the purchase of new and exciting texts. Thank you to our community for supporting this important event and to Mrs Carroll and Ms Hodson for their huge efforts throughout the Book Fair.
P&C Christmas Dinner
Last Wednesday was our final official P&C meeting for 2022. I want to thank our P&C for their ongoing hard work and dedication in working with our school for the benefit of students and our community. While yet again another complex year to navigate, it has been very successful, with the P&C again finding ways to enhance the things we are doing, while providing many valuable experiences and opportunities (with more still to come!). Thank you to everyone involved.
We still have one more date allocated for our P&C to meet, which is Wednesday 14 December. As mentioned though, this is not a meeting as such but a celebratory Christmas dinner. Woonona Bulli RSL has been booked for 6:30pm and we encourage those wishing to attend to come along for what is always a relaxing and enjoyable night. If you are wishing to attend, please email enquiries@wppc.com.au

Book Fair
What an exciting two weeks we had for our Scholastic Book Fair. Last week we sold an amazing $12,202 worth of books which is an outstanding effort for our school. I would like to thank everyone for supporting this event. The school will receive $3,662 in commission to buy books for our school. Most children received their book orders last week. However, there are a few books still on back order and these will hopefully arrive this week. I will sort and deliver orders to students as soon as they arrive.
Library Loans
The Library will be closed weeks 9-10 for stock-take so all student loans will need to be returned by the end of week 8. Overdue notices will be sent out this week and an additional reminder will be sent out the beginning of week 8. Please take the time to help your child locate and return their books this week.
If you received an overdue loan notice and the book is lost, please let us know so it can be wiped from our system. Notices will also list the book price which parents can pay to the office for purchase of a replacement copy. If you receive an overdue notice and the book has already been paid for previously or has already been returned, please send the slip back in with this noted down. Our Library computer system will automatically create notices for any overdue books from this year. Thank you to those students who have already returned books or notified me about lost books.
Thank you for your cooperation with this matter.

Moments in Maths
Students in Stage 3 have been learning about percentages, chance and area over the past few weeks. Below are some photos of their ‘real-life’ experiences!
Will used his knowledge of fractions, decimals, division and subtraction to solve this word problem. He then explained his strategy to his class.
Isolde got the same answer. She knew that 25% meant ¼ and the word ‘discount’ meant she had to subtract the answer from the original amount.
Esme and Bronte know that when they are asked to find a 1/3 of an amount, that this is the same as dividing the total amount by 3!
Here, Lily is showing how she converts fractions to percentages and decimals and vice-versa.
Maths can be done outside on iPads and still lead to many ‘A-ha’ moments. Here, students are measuring the areas of local sporting grounds on Google Earth.
Often, Maths meets English. We can link everyday vocabulary like ‘likely, impossible, certain’ to fractions, decimals and even percentages when thinking about the likelihood of events occurring.
When we need to measure a size of land, for which m2 are too small and km2 are too large, we need a middle-sized unit called the hectare (ha).
Did you know 100ha = 1 km2?
Olivia recognises there are 10 000 m2 in a hectare. She is using this knowledge, along with her knowledge of place value, to make conversions between hectares, m2 and km2.
Rocco has also used his knowledge to make conversions.
Stage 3 students used Google Earth to prove just how BIG 1 square kilometre is!
If the flat is 1ha, what is the area of our school? Most estimated 3 ha. They were close! Chloe L used Google Earth to measure the area of our school and it is around 2.33ha!
Others, like Cleo, measured the area of Hollymount park and the surrounding horse paddocks.
And others measured the area of NSW! We recognised the larger the areas we were measuring, the less accurate we became due to the element of error.
We have also recognised that if we want an accurate drawing of a real-life object, we must use scale. We used a scale of 1cm = 1metre to make real-life representations under the COLA.
Thank you for sharing our Maths journey. In the next newsletter, Stage 2 learning will feature. Stay tuned!
