What does safety look like?
Safety means that the choices you make keep yourself and others physically, mentally, academically, and emotionally safe. Do you know what it means to be emotionally safe? Choosing good friends who are kind will help you to be emotionally safe. Friends that are loyal to you help you to stay safe emotionally. Good friends step in and give you positive feedback when you are feeling depressed. Good friends will tell you when you are hanging out too much with someone who is being mean to you. Good friends will compliment you and let you know how great you are, because they like to see you emotionally happy.
Safety means being safe around other people.
Some students make choices that make other people feel unsafe. Part of the definition of bullying is that a person will feel unsafe when the bully is near them. When bullies say that they are “only kidding,” it doesn’t make anything any better. You are bullying someone else when that person feels unsafe when you are near them. Being kind to others is one of the safest things that you can do, and it helps other people to feel safe around you. Do you know someone who always feels safe to be around? Let them know that you are thankful to them for being the opposite of a bully, and for helping other people to feel safe.
What happens if you don't feel safe?
Sometimes keeping yourself physically or mentally safe means that you have to get help from an adult. If someone is threatening you and making you feel unsafe in any way, and you don’t know how to handle it, the safest thing that you can do is to let an adult know so that they can help you to handle the situation. Sometimes they will just listen and give you advice, sometimes they will step in and do something about the situation, and sometimes they will simply tell other adults to keep an eye on things or change things to make sure that you are safe. When you feel unsafe and you don’t know what to do - tell an adult.
