UAA Advisors Say
First off, congratulations to all of you for successfully completing the spring 2020 semester. I know for many of us, this semester tested our endurance, discipline, and motivation to succeed. We are proud of all of you for your hard work. Despite the many obstacles you demonstrated your resilience and skill to handle anything that comes your way and attained one of the lowest D/F/W/NC grade reporting in all of AMCS history (wowzer)! For the graduating seniors, I hope you continue to use these skills as you transition on to the next level of your studies and in life. For the juniors, continue to push forward as you are accomplishing amazing things while in high school.
Online UAA Classes
Many of you are already receiving notifications about your classes moving to distance education for the fall. Please do not worry, we are aware of these changes and will support you in this transition. You are more than welcome to find an alternative class but please understand that the majority of classes may be online. Contact your advisor if you would like to change your class.
Final UAA Grades
If you are a junior and you earned a D or an F in your UAA courses, you need to set up an appointment with your UAA advisor to make sure your fall schedule ensures you are on track to graduate.
Students who earned a grade of D, F, NC, or W in SP20 will have a reduced schedule in FA20. UAA schedules will need to be addressed if they have not been already. It might be a good idea to take two summer school high school classes, especially since they are FREE this year!
UAA Mass Registration Email
Please disregard an email you may have received from UAA Student Affairs telling you that you are not registered for fall 2020. To check your registration status, go to UAOnline, Registration, then Student Detail Schedule for FA20. If you are not registered, contact your UAA advisor.
Summer Career Exploration
Many of you are not quite confident in which degree pathway you would like to pursue. Having doubt is normal but it’s important for you to begin making some decisions about your immediate future in order for your advisor to help you get ahead. We don’t want students taking classes that won’t equate to a degree. Therefore, it is important that you dedicate intentional time over the summer to research, volunteer, work, and meet with people who work in a career you are considering. Below are four tangible tasks you can complete.
Research- visit www.akcis.org and explore this website thoroughly. The Alaska Career Information Systems website was made to assist students in making an informed career and college choice. For AKCIS: AMCS student username – ancmidcol; Password – 4Student. Additionally, Alaska Career Coach website offers a 60 questions assessment for students to determine their top skills and the career pathways that align with those skills.
Volunteering- Hands on work in any field provides greater insight to the types of job functions you see yourself conducting everyday. Find a volunteer opportunity in a field of your interest or something closely related. Although you are not getting paid, the rewards from this experience can be tremendous.
Employment- Getting paid to work is a goal for many students and no matter what you are doing, take the time to pay attention to your likes and dislikes. Do you enjoy working with people all day, or working by yourself to accomplish a task? Do you like fast paced environments and like to operate with limited distractions? Your answers to questions like these are a great starting point to help you narrow down pathways that align with your skills/abilities and preferences.
Interview a professional- Your parents, church members, neighbors or other adults in your life may work in a field of your interest or know someone who does. Scheduling an informal chat with him/her can provide great insight into your field of interest. Asking questions like, “can you tell me what your average work day looks like”, or “what is something you wish someone would've told you before choosing this career”, is a great way to learn about the day to day realities of any field.
All in all, you are not alone in this journey. Your advisor will continue to ask you questions about your experiences and walk with you along the path of discovery. Ms. Brekke and Ms. Tamika are both available over the summer to answer questions and be of assistance.
Most importantly…… have fun this summer! Use this type to regroup, spend time with family, and develop your character. At the end of the day, it's not the degree that creates success, it's the person behind the degree. You got this!
