A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
CELEBRATE AND CONGRATULATE
Term 3 has certainly started with a flurry of activity. Retreats, carnivals, Catholic performing arts and Year 10 to 11 course counselling are just some of the important activities that have taken place.
On Monday, many College activities were celebrated at a special awards assembly. Students across all fields of College life were affirmed for their achievements commitments and effort. A special highlight of the assembly were the presentations of the College’s first Colours. Forty one students received Colours for their exemplary involvement and achievement across ministry, academic, sporting and cultural aspects of College life. Congratulations to the following students:
STUDENT LEADERSHIP
The process for the appointment of student leaders for 2018 has begun. The first round of appointments are that of College Head Boy and Head Girl. This year the appointment process has been extended to include a student vote. Taking into consideration the student vote as priority, staff vote second priority and the interview process, I am pleased to announce the College Head Boy and Head Girl for 2018:
HEAD GIRL: Tyrah Spencer
HEAD BOY: Dylan Holden
With the celebration of appointment comes disappointment for those who nominated but were not successful. All students who nominated are congratulated for having the courage to put their names forward. The Student Leadership Council will certainly be represented by a very strong and enthusiastic group of students for 2018.
A wonderful part of the process is reading the students’ application forms. I highlight a few snippets from the application forms to the students interpretation of what Prendivillian means to them:
“Becoming Prendivillian was once easy, you simply enrolled. Now it is harder as it means a change of heart and attitudes. It means you are challenged to grow in goodness and commitment to others”
“The term Prendivillian brings with it a sense of pride and makes me feel special. It makes me feel I am part of a community, not just a school.”
PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS - COURSE COUNSELLING
Over the past four days all Year 10 students and their parents have been meeting with our course counsellors to ensure that they are choosing a pathway and courses to success. Prendiville Catholic College is now in a unique position where is offers four distinct pathways for students to achieve their WACE. These pathways allow students to choose courses and a style of learning that best suits their needs, talents and aspirations. I am proud to say we are the only College to offer four pathways as options for students in their senior years.
The four pathways to success are:
1. ATAR or University direct pathway
2. LINKed or alternative University pathway
3. General pathway
4. FLEXed pathway
All pathways for Year 11 are being well subscribed by students which shows that students are discerning and making realistic choices to ensure their graduation years at Prendiville Catholic College are engaging, enjoyable and successful.
GATEWAY CENTRE
The new GATEWAY Centre is now open and being fully utilised. The College now has a wonderful space for our Learning Enhancement Programs, Student Study Centre, FLEXed Classroom and a working Artisan Gallery. An outdoor café area is also nearly complete which will provide a pleasant gathering space for students, parents and visitors to the College.
I wish everyone a wonderful Term 3.

CERTIFICATES OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
Certificates of Academic Excellence recognise the highest achieving students across all subjects or courses in Years 7 to 12.
This year, Certificates of Academic Excellence for students in Years 7 to 10 have been determined using a Grade Point Average (GPA). This method takes into account the number of periods per week for which students study each subject and weights the subject accordingly. For example, any grade in a subject that is studied 4 times per week will be worth twice as much as the same grade in a subject that is studied for only two periods per week. It uses the Cohort (year) Grade.
The maximum Grade Point Average possible is 5. Certificates of Excellence in Years 7 to 10 have been awarded to those students who achieved a GPA of at least 4.7.
Certificates of Excellence in Years 11 and 12 have been awarded to those students who achieved at least 4 A grades and no less than a C.
Congratulations to the following students on their achievement of the certificate.
COLOURS AWARDS
The Prendiville Catholic College Colours Awards are a prestigious achievement and were presented for the first time at assembly on Monday 31 July. The College Colours Awards serve to acknowledge the achievement of excellence in College activities. The awarding of Colours aim to enhance College spirit and student pride and dedication to academic excellence, sporting and cultural endeavours and service to the community. The Colours Awards recognises consistent and sustained application and effort in all areas of College life. Recipients of the College Colours Award embody College Spirit in their awareness of others by being empathetic and displaying initiative in the positive development of the College culture.
We congratulate the worthy recipients of the College Colours Awards who are acknowledged in Mr Antulov's article earlier in this newsletter.

YEAR 11 RETREAT: THE CHALLENGE OF LEADERSHIP
In the first week of Term 3, Year 11 students were involved in their annual two-day Retreat. The theme of this year’s Retreat was Leadership and Teamwork with students involved in activities centred on raising their awareness of the idea of servant leadership and opportunities to demonstrate team work to overcome challenges.
All students spent one of the days at Teamworks Australia in Claremont where they undertook the Adventure Challenge under the supervision of our staff and experts from Teamworks. One of the biggest challenges the students had to overcome was the weather but to their credit they responded to all the challenges of the day with great commitment, energy and enthusiasm. Staff from Teamworks were highly complimentary of our students’ willingness to involve themselves in even the most challenging of events.
The second day of the Retreat was centred on activities designed to raise awareness of the nature of authentic leadership and particularly the model of leadership in the service of the wider community. Very soon these students will be considering nominating for leadership positions within our College community and the activities of this day were designed to provide insights to what leadership really means.
The Retreat concluded with a Mass in the Chapel where Father Joe’s homily encouraged students to become involved in the College through the various leadership opportunities on offer and particularly, to consider nominating for the student Ministry Team.
The Year 11 Retreat was a great opportunity for students to come together and share in year group based activities. These sorts of opportunities can only take place with the help and support of our teaching staff and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their efforts.
Finally, I would like to thank the students of Year 11 for their willing participation in the activities of both days. Your willingness to give everything a go and your support for the programme guaranteed the success of both days.

CANBERRA TOUR
On one of Canberra’s coldest nights ever, 37 of our students stepped off the plane to begin the 2017 Canberra Tour. Over the next seven days the students visited and participated in educational programs at more than 20 different venues to learn about the history and heritage, culture and development of Australia. The tour covered everything from the birth and development of the nation at the National Archives, to the scientific breakthroughs made by the CSIRO and Geoscience Australia. Students discovered the nation’s diverse biomes at the National Botanic Gardens and explored the development of Australian media at the National Film and Sound Archive.
Students examined the importance of the political process of Australia through the educational programs at the Electoral Education Centre, the Museum of Australian Democracy and Parliament House itself. Of equal importance, was our visit to the Australian War Memorial. Whilst here, students gained an understanding of Australia’s role in global conflicts and paid their respects to those who gave their lives in service of the nation. We were very fortunate to participate in a wreath laying ceremony and to speak with an Australian veteran afterwards which was something I’m sure will stay with the students for many years to come.
Every day brought something new and fun for the students, but none more so than the day they spent learning to ski at Smiggin Holes at Perisher. For many it was their first time seeing snow and the conditions were perfect. While there were a few tumbles in the snow, everyone walked away with a huge smile and yet another unforgettable memory.
The tour concluded in Sydney. The students were treated to tours of the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge Pylon; walks through Circular Quay, Manly Wharf, the historic Rocks district and Taronga Zoo. Our accommodation, afforded amazing views of the harbour and each morning and night, students could be found on the roof to take in the beautiful vista.
One of the first, and most important thanks, must go to the Parliamentary and Civics Education Rebate program. This program, an initiative of the Australian Government, provided $240 per student to reduce the costs of this tour and make it more readily accessible for the students to participate. Without it, the costs would have been much higher and we are very grateful to have received it.
It was a very successful tour with the students learning a great deal and having a lot of fun in the process. I hope that the friendships and experience they had on the tour stay with them for a long time to come. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff who gave up their holidays to attend the tour: Mr Jamie Birrell, Ms Jade Charles and Mrs Paula O’ Donnell. I am very grateful for their positive attitudes, sense of humour and willingness to get involved at every stage – the students and I agree that the tour was made better for having them there.

BENVENUTI A PRENDIVILLE! WELCOME TO PRENDIVILLE!
It’s that time of the year again when we welcome our WAATI/Intercultural exchange students from Italy. This year we play host to three lovely girls for eight weeks. They are:
- Alessia Sechi from the Province of Matera in the south of Italy who is staying with Samantha Irwin and family.
- Alessia Mattei from the capital Rome, who is living with Storme Williams and family.
- Angela Mastrosimone from Noci, near Bari, who is being hosted by Alicia Politi and family.
The students are here during their summer holidays to experience the Australian culture and improve their English language skills.
Their first impressions?
I love Australia! I’m so thankful for this opportunity to discover a new culture. I saw the kangaroos for the first time and they are so cute and adorable. I love Tim Tams, every day I eat them. I love my family and my host sister Storme (and my host brother!). I’m so happy to be here. Ciao!
Alessia Mattei
I’m very happy for this exchange. Australia is so nice and the Australians too. I have a lovely host family and I like my host sister Alicia. We are the same, like twins! I like everything of Australia. The food is so good, the school is so big and different with lots of good subjects. I want to visit lots of places and see lots of animals. I’ve seen kangaroos and I love them! I hope that in the future I’ll come back here again.
Angela Mastrosimone
I'm enjoying Australia so much and I found that there are lots of differences between Australia and Italy. I like the Australian school system because they change class every hour and don't stay with the same people each period and because there are lots of different subjects to choose from.
Alessia Sechi
Of course this opportunity would not be possible for these girls without the generosity of the Prendiville families and for this we extend a heartfelt “grazie”. We wish the girls a wonderful stay and look forward to seeing them back again in a few years.

Congratulations to all students on your performances throughout the Interhouse Carnival. Winter CAS Wrap up
Congratulations to all involved in the Term 2 CAS competition that concluded with Grand Finals in Week 10 of Term 2. Once again as a College we have performed admirably with 12 out of 15 teams finishing in the top 3 of their respective competitions. The following teams were able to make it to the Grand Final with four coming away as Premiers. Special mention to Mr Williamson and the Year 7 Boys AFL team who completed their third straight year as undefeated Premiers.
Senior Boys Soccer - Runner Up
Year 7 Boys AFL - Undefeated Premiers
Year 7A Netball - Premiers
Year 7B Netball - Undefeated Premiers
Year 8/9 Boys AFL - Premiers
The following students received individual awards for their performance throughout the season:
I once again extend my thanks and gratitude to everyone who has been involved in the CAS sporting programme throughout Semester 1 this year. With 28 teams providing opportunities to nearly 500 students it is a massive undertaking each year and it simply would not be possible without the commitment and efforts of countless individuals as coaches, managers, officials, scorers and spectators. I look forward to another successful CAS campaign in 2018.
2017 Northern Schools Rugby Competition
Both teams played their first games against Lake Joondalup last week and Round 2 will take place in Week 3. Both the Year 7/8 and Year 9/10 Boys teams still have plenty of space for other students who wish to join. Rugby experience is certainly not a prerequisite and a large emphasis is placed on teaching the fundamental skills and rules to ensure student safety remains our number 1 concern. Students who wish to join or maybe just give Rugby a try are welcome and encouraged to attend training sessions before school on Monday (7-8am) before deciding if they wish to take the field in an official fixture. Please contact myself or either of our two Rugby coaches; Mr Paul Stenner- year 7/8 or Mr Jeremy Broderick- year 9/10 for more information.
SPORTAL Page
With a new term comes a whole new range of sporting opportunities. Please access the SPORTAL page on SEQTA to check for fixtures, training schedules, timetables, programmes and much more when it comes to sport at Prendiville. The SPORTAL page is updated regularly however if something is missing/ incorrect please notify me ASAP so amendments can be made. A new weekly sporting timetable has been added for Term 3 (at the top of the page) that gives a great snapshot of everything that is happening in Sport this term.
Sporting Achievement
Ben Hillen (Year 10) is collecting accolades for his X Country running this year. At the ACC Carnival in Term 2, Ben received his 4th ACC All Stars award that has now qualified him for the ACC Letterman Club. Furthermore, he has been named in the Western Australian Team to compete at the National Schools Championships in Hobart in August.
Logan Foley (Year 9) is currently competing in the U15 State Schoolboys AFL team in the National Championships here in Perth.

It is a modern, dynamic system, which integrates all of our Library IT systems. For example, our EBSCO and eLibrary databases as well as our Wheelers eBooks. It will give our Library users 24-hour access to all resources from any device. It simultaneously searches across multiple online content providers. The Library Search facility can be found on the student dashboard. Students log in using their usual school user name and password. They can reserve books and renew an item once, if it has not been reserved by someone else. Accessit also allows users to set up their reading interests so alerts can be sent to them of new Library books, which match their interests. It will also send recommendations based on previous loans.

An associate of Prendiville Catholic College, studying to become a social worker, has initiated a program called 'The Cinderella Project'. The project aims to help girls from other schools who are unable to go to their school balls for different reasons, mostly because they can’t afford to buy a dress, shoes, etc. Donations of dresses, shoes, handbags and dress jewellery to assist the project would be greatly appreciated and can be handed in to the Administration office. Ms Jade Charles has generously offered to co-ordinate the project at Prendiville.
