HUDSON ALPHA BICENTENNIAL BARCODING PROJECT

HudsonAlpha Bicentennial Barcoding Project

HudsonAlpha's Bicentennial Barcoding project was a citizen science project designed to engage high school students in identifying, collecting and documenting Alabama’s exceptional botanical diversity using an approach called “DNA barcoding.” Thank you to Mrs. Theresa Durboraw and the students of Buckhorn High School, and Bill Finch their community partner from The Nature Conservancy, for collecting 25 plants. These contributed to a total of 1,491 plant samples collected statewide! Students from Buckhorn High School were the first to submit samples identified by barcodes for 3 native plants. Statewide, 183 native plants were identified with their barcodes. Some of these plants were rare within the state and around the globe! Please take a moment to view the video above in order to get an overview of the Bicentennial barcode project; experience its impact on the students, teachers, and community partners in the words of those who participated.

FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID

It is time to start filling out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)!!!

Happy FAFSA season! The FAFSA portal for the 2020-2021 school year is now OPEN. Students and their families can begin filling out their financial aid application for next year at fafsa.gov

NCAN: FAFSA Completion Guide

The National College Access Network has just released their updated FAFSA completion Guide that focuses on the most common pain points for filers from low-income backgrounds. Check it out here: https://formyourfuture.org/the-guide/

Scheduled IRS DRT Outage

The IRS Data Retrieval Tool will be down on Sunday, Oct. 6 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET for system upgrades. Users will be able to access fafsa.gov and the myStudentAid mobile app during the outage, according to FSA, but any tax information required will have to be entered manually. NCAN strongly encourages use of the IRS DRT to complete the FAFSA, when possible, to reduce the likelihood of being selected for verification.

Sign Up to Round Up!

The Round Up Program was started by The Schools Foundation and Huntsville Utilities to support local public school systems. The Schools Foundation is a funding partner of Madison County Schools. The more residential and commercial locations that round up, the more funding we can receive. Estimates show that if just half of the residential Huntsville Utilities users rounded up, it would generate approximately $500,000 to support our schools! By rounding up your utility bill to the nearest dollar each month, you help invest in the future of our students!

You can easily sign up to round up online:

http://www.hsvutil.org/myhsvu…/checkbill/roundup/signup.html

It might be a penny, it might be 25 cents, it might be 99 cents, but it will be no more than $11.88 a year. It takes less than 1 minute to fill out.

Thank you for supporting one of our community partners! Go Bucks!
