Raider Nation Round-Up
To LRHS Juniors and Seniors from the College Counselor
Second Semester has begun!
Juniors - IMPORTANT!!! - Did you know that colleges will be using your cumulative GPA and QPA through 11th grade only for your admissions decision? We are going to want you to apply early for college next year which means, that there will not be grades from 12th grade available to send to colleges with your application. So, that is why this year is SO important! Many colleges will ask for mid-year grades from 12th grade. Colleges will have a list of classes that you are taking in 12th grade so, as you choose your classes for your senior year, make sure that you are choosing rigorous classes (think AP and/or CCBC courses) in which you can achieve an A or B. Colleges like to see full-day schedules with challenging classes.
Seniors! You are entering the home-stretch now. Don't stop pushing yourselves! The college that you ultimately choose will want your final transcript. It is important to show your schools that you have not given in to that Senioritis that is creeping in! If your colleges have requested mid-year transcripts, please email Ms. Campbell at scampbell3@bcps.org so that we can send them to your colleges when they become available through BCPS.
As always, reach out to me at any time by email: scampbell3@bcps.org or Schoology. Parents can also be granted access to their child's Naviance account by requesting a registration code from me. Also, be sure to join the LRHS College Counseling Schoology Group with the join code: DCK69-64XX5
WHAT SENIORS SHOULD BE DOING NOW
-Complete and submit your FAFSA! The deadline for MD is March 1st! Even if you don't think that you will qualify for federal money, colleges and scholarships often want the FAFSA completed to determine financial aid status. Get started at http://www.fafsa.gov
-Applying for scholarships! Check out several below and in the College Counseling and Class of 2021 Schoology groups for local scholarship opportunities as well as Naviance under "Colleges" and "Scholarships and Money". Scholarships have deadlines just like colleges so make sure that you get your materials in on time or you most likely will be disqualified. If you need something like a letter of recommendation or a transcript, make sure you are giving adults at least 2 weeks to get those things together for you!
-See the attached document for financial aid resources and links!
-For students who were identified via email and postal letter regarding the GA Grant through the State of MD, all documentation is due by April 1st to mailto:documents.mhec@maryland.gov If you do not submit all of the items on your to-do list in your MDCaps account by that date, you will forfeit the money! Contact Ms. Campbell immediately with any help needed. See attachment below.
-For students who were identified via email regarding the College Promise Scholarship (free tuition to CCBC!), all documentation is due to the State of MD by June 30th, 2021 to mailto:documents.mhec@maryland.gov
See more info below
-For students who have been admitted to a college, you should be receiving your financial aid packages from the college soon! Read them CAREFULLY and realize that colleges often calculate student and parent loans into the equation, even if that was not your plan! See the sheet below on how to understand your award letter.
-Still interested in attending a 4 year college but missed the deadline? Consider applying to a school with rolling admissions. These schools accept students as the applications come in until a particular date or they have reached their quota of students for their freshman class. https://www.niche.com/colleges/search/top-rolling-admissions-colleges/s/maryland/

What Juniors Should Be Doing Now
-Attend Loch Raven's Virtual Junior Family College Night on February 10th at 7 pm. See info below!
-Register for the SAT! Saturday, March 13th is the next administration of the SAT. Go to http://www.collegeboard.org, log in to your account and go to "My SAT" to register. You may take the SAT at ANY location. At this point, we do not know if there will be a school-day administration of the SAT for Juniors so it is better to register and then cancel down the road and receive a refund if needed. Students should consider taking the SAT this Spring and then at least one more time in the summer or very early fall.
-Register for the ACT on April 17th! http://www.actstudent.org Colleges will accept scores from either test equally. Some students prefer the ACT. Check out the differences in the two tests in the article below. Colleges will accept either the SAT or the ACT. See the differences in the two tests below.
-PRACTICE FOR THE SAT! Make sure you are ready for the SAT and take it seriously! Use Khan Academy for preparation which is linked up in your College Board account. 20 hours of practice = an average score raise of 115 points!
-Visit colleges! Spring is the time to visit colleges if possible in person but certainly, virtually. Check on the colleges' websites under the visitation links to see the possibilities!
-Please email Ms. Campbell at mailto:scampbell3@bcps.org if you are in need of a Naviance code so that you can follow your child's progress on Naviance.
