Mrs. Darnell 1st Grade

Dear Parent,

Last week we had such a great time celebrating Valentine’s Day. Thank you for your help with the Valentine’s Party. The kids had a fun time reading all the Valentines and sweet notes from their friends and munching on yummy snacks!

Math

In math, we will begin our subtraction unit, subtraction facts to 12. The lessons teach children to count back and to use addition to subtract. Please continue to practice both addition and subtraction facts at home. Some students tend to confuse the two skills.

A good site to practice math facts is “Are you a Math Magician?” http://oswego.org/ocsd-web/games/mathmagician/maths1.html.

Math Homework

Please check your child's folder tonight. In the plastic sleeve you will find daily math homework. The work is to be done vertically. There are 5 quick and easy review problems going down; please have your child review addition, place value, number patterns, skip counting, and time each night. Have your child return the math homework page on Monday mornings. This will give you time to do 4 nights of homework at your family's convenience. Feel free to email me if you have any questions.

Social Studies

This week we will discuss President's Day. We will learn about George Washington and towards the end of the week we will compare and contrast the two presidents. Did you know Washington never lived in the White House? At the end of the week we will share the importance of good dental health.

Read to Succeed

Please don’t forget that if your child is participating in the ‘Read to Succeed’ program, the form needs to be returned by Monday, February 23rd for a free child’s Six Flags ticket.
