County Central October Hawk Talk
'Home of the Hawks'
Principal's Point
Dear Parents & Guardians,
I hope you are all doing well and staying safe. Our academic year is fully underway, and our staff is enjoying getting to know all of our new students. We've had a busy first month of school. Our start-up went well, with a staggered start and an opportunity to orient our new students. Our current enrolment is 199, 78 of which are in junior high and 121 in senior high.
Sports are running right along. Our golf team did well during their short season of play, with the mixed team bringing home the zone banner. Our cross country team was off to Lethbridge yesterday for their meet, and our volleyball teams have had several games and tournaments. Thank you to all of the volunteer coaches and managers who have made our sports seasons possible this year!
Our school spent this past week preparing for Orange Shirt Day, which we recognized on September 29th. Classes were able to have discussions about the history of residential schools, watch videos to better understand the perspectives of survivors, and explore the 94 Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's report. Staff and students wore orange shirts to show our solidarity with residential school survivors and to share the message that every child matters. We hope that our students and their families were able to spend some time on September 30th reflecting on our country's history as we recognized the first Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
The Hawk's Nest opened on October 3rd. We are once again offering nutritious food options free of charge (sandwiches, juice, yogurt, veggies, cheese, etc.). We are still exploring options for offering a hot lunch twice a week and will keep our families posted.
On October 7th, we will be having our first junior high collaborative day of the year, so there will be no school for students in Grades 7 & 8 that day. The junior high collaborative days are built into the schedule in order to offset the surplus instructional hours accumulated by having junior high students follow a senior high timetable and our teachers use these days to collaborate on programming and supports for our students.
I hope you all have a Happy Thanksgiving next week and have a chance to enjoy the company of friends and family.

Learning Commons
Hello and welcome to the Learning Commons Corner!
I am excited to, once again, help the students of CCHS through my role as Career & Academic Counselor/Learning Commons Facilitator.
In hopes to better communicate career & academic opportunities, I have google classrooms set up for all Grade 10, 11, and 12 students. PLEASE ENSURE YOUR CHILD HAS ACCEPTED MY INVITE as there is always an abundance of information pertaining to Post Secondary information sessions and Open Houses, Scholarship information, Work Experience, Green Certificate, and Dual Credit Opportunities.
As the year is well underway, I have had the opportunity to speak with most Grade 11 and 12 students, but encourage all students in Grades 10-12 to drop in and see me. It is important to discuss their plans and how we can work towards them, whether they include post secondary or other options.
Some exciting plans for October include:
A field trip to the Lethbridge College Trades buildings for Grade 11 and 12 students interested in taking a trade. More information to come as details are figured out. I will also plan the same field trip for Grade 10 students at a later date!
I am working with Vulcan Emergency Services in hopes of setting up a Distracted Driving and Rollover Simulator Demo for our high school students to take part in. We are in the beginning stages of planning and will share more details as they develop.
French International Student Opportunity
We are looking for a student interested in partaking in an exchange program with a student from France. We have a 15 year old male student who wants to spend a month here next summer and then have one of our students return to France with them for one month. There is no money exchanged for the exchange program, the student's family will be responsible for the flight to and from France and will also be responsible for extra costs for the french student while they are here. And vice versa when our student goes to France, the family there will be responsible for any extra costs for our student.
'My name is Merovée, I am a 15 year old boy who is looking for a Canadian correspondent to
make an exchange from 3 weeks to 1 month in the summer of 2023 from the beginning of
June.
I live in Nantes in the west of France and I like sports, battery and nature walks. I would
like to visit the Canadian mountains.
I am in my second year of high school. I would be very happy to have a Canadian
correspondent to improve my English and discover this country.
I can accommodate a male or female correspondent who will have her single room with
shower. We live in a house with a garden very close to Nantes. I have 2 older brothers
Thomas (22 years old) who is studying engineering in Grenoble in computer science and
Noé (20 years old) who is an alpine hunter in Annecy. They are no longer at home during
school periods.'
