January- February News
News from the GPS Learning Commons
Finding Olaf!
Olaf is playing a game of hide and seek with the scouts at GPS in January. Each week he will be hiding at an American Landmark in the continental USA. Be sure to ask your child what the clue was each day. His destination will be revealed on Friday mornings on the news show! We will be learning about the geography of the USA while also learning about several famous landmarks!
Frank Martin Math Challenge
USC men's basketball coach joined with the SC EOC to offer students in grades K-8 a math challenge. Similar to the EOC's Read for the Game, once the math lesson is completed, students have a chance to win two tickets to a USC men's game. Second grade began the challenge on the two days back from winter break by working on using coins to buy selections from the concession stand. They worked in pairs and had to make the same amount in at least 2 different ways. Kindergarten will be putting groups together to make simple addition sentences. First grade will be playing a game to find equal equations. While doing these lessons we are also highlighting our awesome collection of math books. Want more information? Check it out here.
SC Picture Book Nominees
During January and February we will also be reading many of the SC Picture Book nominees. A list of the book can be found here. The SC Association of School Librarians has a committee that reads over 200 picture books each year and then has the arduous task of narrowing that list down to just 20 of the best picture books released in the last year. Many of our scouts will be reading them and writing their opinions of which one they think is the best. We will be casting an actual vote the end of February and sending in the title of the one book we have chosen as our school winner. The state winner is announced at the annual SCASL conference in March. GPS Learning Commons Leaders have been reading the books and you may notice their posters around the school. We will also be highlighting some titles on the news show in the mornings! Here is a video provided by SCASL of each title.

February 16, 2017 we will observe World Read Aloud Day sponsored by LitWorld.
"Every year World Read Aloud Day calls global attention to the importance of reading aloud and sharing stories."
We will be celebrating the whole week by making connections all over the US and reading great books together! If you would like more information about this wonderful literacy event, you can check the LitWorld site here.
