What We Are Learning
Math
Chapter 7
We are learning about the many ways to solve a multiplication problem. The students worked in teams to come up with as many ways as possible to solve 27 x 5 and as a class we had 7 different strategies. It is so important that the students do not simply memorize an algorithm, but truly understand what it means to say a number times another number.
Math Test: Chapter 6 test is in your student's Friday Folder

Science
We continued our science unit on "How Living Things Get Energy." This week we learned about microorganisms. We talked about how some microorganisms are helpful to us, but some are harmful.
We also started our Decomposition Lab. We are observing two pieces of banana. One is sitting in a zip-loc bag by itself. The other was covered in yeast (a decomposer). We made a prediction that the banana with yeast will decompose faster than the plain banana because it will have help from the yeast.
Ch. 1 Test - will go home in next week's Friday Folder. I was so pleased to see how well the students did! I can tell that many of them really studied and had a great grasp of the concepts in this chapter :)

CA Run
We are running like crazy! So far Room 1 has made it up the coast to Hollywood and are now on our way to San Francisco. We have 42 miles to go. Please make sure your students are wearing appropriate running shoes on Tuesdays and Thursday.
Social Curriculum
This week was Red Ribbon Week. We spent the week talking about healthy choices for our bodies and minds. The students were encouraged to talk about how they exercise and eat healthy to keep their bodies strong and healthy. We also talked about getting enough sleep, staying positive, and laughing a lot to keep our minds healthy.
WHEEL
In WHEEL the students are working in the computer lab and in the science lab.
In computers the class is going to begin research for their biography reports. They will also be learning how to cite sources.

Halloween Carnival
A big THANK YOU to all of the families that came out to help with the Halloween Carnival. Our booth was a huge success as were the delicious tamales. I had fun seeing so many of you there with your great costumes. Thank you Krissie Copp for making sure that we had all of the volunteers that we needed!
