Unit 3A Study Guide
Neural Processing & the Endocrine System
Neural Communication
Neurons
How Neurons Communicate
Neurons communicate using electrical and chemical signals the process of passing these messages are as follows.
1. Dendrites receive signal from another neuron
2.The neuron stimulation changes the electrical charge in the neuron (from negative to positive) called depolarization.
3. The charges along the axon depolarize and repolarize until the charge reaches the terminal branches
4. At the terminal branches, neurotransmitters are released into the synapse to trigger depolarization in the next neuron.
5. The neurotransmitters are taken back into the neuron (reuptake)
The above video goes into a little too much detail but is a great review of what happens at the synapses
