Eastwood Academy Newsletter - September 2019

Welcome Back!

What a wonderful first day of school we have have had! 452 students were present and accounted for on the first day of school. That's nearly 40 more students than we've ever had. While we are excited to expand offerings to more students this school year, we also value the traditions our community has come to expect from Eastwood as a small school of choice. We will only growth within our levels of comfort and to the extent that we are able to provide a quality educational experience to all students.

Schedule Changes

Many students are requesting a change in schedule. Please know that most schedules were created based on the course requests students submitted last school year. The exception to this is incoming students. With 452 students, it takes time to get changes made, so your patience is very much appreciated. Please also keep in mind that the following criteria is what determines the need for a schedule change.

*~Attendance~*

Your child's attendance is very crucial to the every day functioning of our school. Despite the fact that your child attends 4 separate classes every day, if he/she is not marked present for the second period class at 10:30 a.m., he/she is counted absent for the entire school day by the State of Texas. Each time a child is marked absent for the school day, the campus loses funding for the next school year. Last school year, we had an average attendance rate of 97.7%. While that sounds terrific, this number resulted in an approximate loss in funding totaling over $50,000! That's nearly the cost to fund a teacher.

Please keep the state of our campus in mind when you choose to keep your child at home for the day. Of course, dire illness and family emergencies are legitimate excused absences, so we do not expect you to send your child to us if there is an extenuating circumstance. Just be mindful of the effects of allowing your child to stay home when they could be present. The more times he/she is not on campus, the further the student will fall behind academically.

Guideline to keep in mind:

  • If you need to check your child out of school during the day, please do so between the hours of 11:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Open House

This school year, our teachers did a lot of work around developing a common set of standards and expectations for our AP Program courses and the 9th grade courses. For this reason, our teachers would like to have a parent meeting to convey these expectations and have an open dialogue about how our families can support the work going on at Eastwood. These parent meetings will take place on the same day, right before the general Open House begins. Dates and times can be found below.

Off-Campus Lunch

Juniors and seniors are allowed to leave campus at lunch once they have met the following guidelines:

  • Parents/guardians must sign the permission slip for Off Campus Lunch privileges.
  • Students must have completed and returned all of their Title I documentation, including the Socioeconomic Form, and all signed documents required in the Student Packet.
  • Students must not be on either academic or disciplinary probation.
  • Students may leave and will be responsible for their own action and safety during such period.
  • If a student returns tardy from lunch, the first incident will result in an after-school detention from 4:10 PM – 5:10 PM, as designated by the applicable teacher. The second incident will result in revocation of such privileges for a period of six weeks. The third incident will result in permanent revocation of privileges.
  • If students arrive tardy from lunch with food in their hands, the food will be confiscated, and a parent called immediately. Students in this scenario will not be allowed to take their food to class. Instructional time is preserved at all times.
  • Students will be issued a laminated Off-Campus Lunch Privileges card with their student ID number on it. Students must show their Eastwood ID badge and their current Lunch permit card to the person on duty at the front gate before leaving campus.
  • Replacement lunch permit cards cost $3.00.
  • Campus administrators reserve the right to revoke off-campus lunch passes for excessive absences or disciplinary and academic concerns that are not aligned with campus expectations.

FREE Internet Hot Spot!

The Sprint Foundation provides the district with a donation to provide free internet access to high school students (grades 9-12) who did not have high-speed internet at home. The district will continue our partnership with the Sprint 1 Million Project to provide internet hotspots to eligible high school students enrolled in a PowerUp campus. Eligibility for the donation will be determined through student survey responses indicating no internet access at home. The survey is available in English and Spanish.

Students who are eligible to receive the donation will be notified by the district and provided with additional details during the fall 2019 semester. Parents and students are not financially responsible for the donation. Eligible students will keep the mobile hotspot throughout their high school career (four years) at no cost to the families. The hotspot and charger must be turned in prior to leaving the district or graduation. To identify those students in need, students MUST complete the application survey. The link is accessible by clicking the button below.
