Principal Message

At Lackamas students and adults have heard a strong message of inclusion and dignity for all, and the challenge to put those concepts into action so that all students feel welcomed, supported, represented and safe. Janaury has brought us many ways to put this in action from the WE Care Sports assembly, MLK, and Kindness Week Activities.

I am reminded of one of my favorite quotes by Maya Angelou that always rings true. She wrote, "People will forget the things you do, and people will forget the things you say. But people will never forget the way you made them feel."

There are so many different things going on in the world right now. I am grateful for the families of Lackamas for sending us such amazing kids that focus on the positive and make school such a great place to be each day.

Belonging at Lackamas

I read a post by one of my favorite non-profits who shared about how they are empowering belonging in those they serve. It made me think about how we are empowering belonging at Lackamas. For me belonging is bigger than do staff or students feel like they belong. I ask myself daily how do we show our community they belong to? This month I would like to share with you some of our community partnerships and thank them for giving and supporting our school as we work on belonging.

  • Cascade Camp is a Business Partner that works with us regularly to support kids. Because of their partnership student have ThisisY t-shirts and went camping this fall. We are also planning a June field trip with some special surprises. Check out their website for some amazing opportunities for families and students. They host family camps, a summer day camp, and summer overnight camps that are 5 stars AMAZING.
  • The Cowlitz Tribal Foundation helps by providing financial support to our rural school.
  • Olympic Limo Service worked with us to provide Field Trip transportation when we didn't have district buses available.
  • Central Glassworks is working with our building to show students how they can be fine artists and have hands-on experience with being glass artists.
  • PTO is our Parent Teacher Organization that strives to help connect our families with our teachers. They are always looking for more help. Follow them on Facebook and join a zoom meeting to learn more about being part of this amazing group.
  • Yelm Rotary has funded 6 classroom projects this year and continues to provide support for our kids. THANK YOU for caring and partnering with us.

One of the reasons Lackamas is so special is our connection to our community and the belonging we create together, build, and share together. ALL belong here. Because of our connections and commitment to building belonging we have rich opportunities and experiences that build a lifetime of memories for our students and families to celebrate being part of a school focused on excellence.

Central Glassworks Field Trip

The field trip to Central Glassworks has been a highlight for us. This career and fine arts experience was inspired by an exhibition at the Museum of Glass celebrating the relationship between designers and master glassblowers. This designer-maker relationship begged the question: Can children be designers of fine art too? At Lackamas we think so. During the Specialist time in art, Mrs. Bawn & Mrs. Jorgensen have been working with EVERY student to create designs that are submitted to the Central Glassworks Hot Shop professional artists to review. On the field trip students have been engaging in making a glass piece of art to represent the No Excuses University College mascot for each classroom. That will become part of a perpetual art project we have at Lackamas. The child designer is an integral part of the creation of these pieces, interacting with the glassblowers to ensure all elements are made correctly.

The Hot Shop Team wants you to know that they relish the challenge of being pushed into uncharted territories. The whimsical designs that we are seeing kids make in 2D are often extraordinarily difficult to create with glass so we can’t wait to share the final art piece with our community next month.

Students are also be making their own “Kindness Heart” paperweights to keep as part of this experience.

THANKS to the Cowlitz Tribal Foundation this field trip is FREE!!!
