In the Classroom

It's going to be an exciting new year in first grade! This week we are making resolutions and reviewing expectations so we can be the best learners possible! It's hard to believe we're already halfway through the year. I am looking forward to helping your child meet their first grade goals!

Learning This Week

Word Work- This week's sight words are: think, good, very, why, put. This week's word pattern is -ink (sink, pink, wink, clink, think, etc.)

Reading- This week students will write about their reading. They will tell about their favorite part, their favorite character, describe a setting, or tell about the lesson learned. By the end of first grade, students should be able to describe characters, setting, major events, and central message using key details and illustrations.

Writing- This week students will review writing narrative stories about themselves. We will review important parts, such as including a beginning, middle, and end, an interesting sentence to begin, transition words, punctuation, and capitalization. By the end of first grade students should be able to write narrative stories with sequenced events, details, transitional words, and a closure.

Math- Students will continue exploring place value concepts, including comparing numbers. By the end of first grade, students should be able to read, write and represent 2-digit numbers as tens and ones.

Science- This week students are learning about 3 different types of energy- light, sound, and heat.

Last week's class attendance: 97.05%

Our attendance goal for Sweeny is 96% or higher attendance. In our classroom, we are trying to earn an attendance celebration. Every day that we have 100% attendance we earn a letter. When we spell "perfect attendance," we will celebrate! "If you're not at school, you're not learning!"
