December 2019
Happy Holidays!
We know that December becomes a very busy month for families. It also becomes a busy month at school, as we have fewer school days. We are doing our best to keep routines and structures in place at school, as students do best when their world is predictable. We will also take time to recognize traditions and celebrations that are celebrated by the families of our students. If you do not yet have a family tradition, you might consider starting one. This could be a special family meal, an activity, a shared story, or any other event. Kids look forward to celebrating traditions and they help them bond with those they love in their family. Traditions nurture family connections, give a sense of belonging, and help us celebrate generations of family. Children crave the warm and positive feelings that come from family traditions and memories.
Thank you for sharing your children with us and for helping us make this a special month with shared family traditions, a celebration of 2019 and teaching gratitude.

Focus on IB Learner Profile - Open-Minded
We have focused on the IB learner profile attributes of caring, inquirer, and risk-taker. This month, we are focusing on being Open-Minded. Teaching open-mindedness is more critical than ever in our ever-changing world. It is important for students to know that we can respect the differences in others. We can listen respectfully to other peoples' thoughts and ideas, even if they are different from our own. We can show cooperation and respect when we are open-minded. We can work well with others and at the same time be considerate to ourselves, others, and the world in which we live.
Open-Minded students understand and appreciate their own cultures and personal histories, and are open to the perspectives, values and traditions of other individuals and communities. They are accustomed to seeking and evaluating a range of points of view, and are willing to grow from the experience. Please read more about this attribute and consider how you can incorporate this at home.
An Open-Minded student knows that all people are different. They listen to the points of view of others and consider many possibilities before making a decision. They celebrate the differences that make all people unique. Please consider encouraging your child to be Open-Minded at home.
- Encourage your child to try new things – new foods, new games and new activities.
- Expose your child to different festivals, celebrations and traditions and be sure to present them in a non-judgmental way.
- Encourage your child to really listen to others when they speak.
- Introduce literature about many different cultures into your home library. Be sure that it is appropriate and reflects the culture in an appropriate way.
- When you observe your child being Open-Minded, reinforce this positive behavior and use the PYP Learner Profile terms.

Communication and Preparedness
Student and staff safety is of paramount importance in the Sioux City Community School District. For this reason, the District exercises a host of crisis prevention and planning tactics. Should an emergency occur, the school notifies you through our Blackboard phone system. In an emergency, the system calls every phone number associated with your child in order to reach you. The message will give you details about the emergency and provide directions on when/where to pick up your child if the normal school day is altered. Learn more about school safety.
