LONG APPOINTED AS ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT OF LEARNING SERVICES
Scott previously served within the West Bloomfield School District as Assistant Principal of Orchard Lake Middle School from 2013 to 2017 and Principal of Doherty Elementary from 2018 to 2021. Prior to serving in an administrative role, Scott served as a teacher at Orchard Lake Middle School teaching subjects including English Language Arts, AVID and History from 2004-2013.
He earned his Bachelor of Science in Education from Central Michigan University in 2004 and his Master’s in Reading and Literacy (K-12) from Central Michigan University in 2010. He also received his Education Specialist Certification in Leadership from Oakland University in 2015.
JAMES APPOINTED AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF EDUCATIONAL EQUITY AND INCLUSION
Sonja earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Bethune-Cookman University in 1989 and her Master's Degree in Elementary Education from Nova South Eastern University.
She previously served within the West Bloomfield School District as principal of Orchard Lake Middle School from 2005 to 2012 and principal of Sheiko Elementary from 2012-2021. She also taught fifth grade at Doherty Elementary earlier in her career.
SMITH APPOINTED AS DIRECTOR OF STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES
Dr. Kyana Smith has been appointed to the position of Director of Student Support Services. Dr. Smith’s appointment was confirmed at the July 21 West Bloomfield Board of Education special meeting. Dr. Smith will start her new position effective August 2.
Dr. Smith earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science from Western Michigan University in 2000. She then earned her Master's Degree in Teaching with a focus on Special Education and Emotional Impairment in 2004 and her Education Specialist in Special Education and Cognitive Impairment in 2008, both from Wayne State University. Dr. Smith earned her Doctor of Philosophy degree from Wayne State University in 2019.
Prior to joining the West Bloomfield School District, Dr. Smith was a member of the Garden City School District serving as Associate Director of the Burger School of Autism since 2019 and a teacher consultant from 2017 to 2019. Dr. Smith also worked in Detroit Public Schools and the Pontiac School District to start her career serving in a variety of roles including special education teacher, MCIC teacher, and teacher consultant.
SPITZLEY APPOINTED AS PRINCIPAL OF DOHERTY ELEMENTARY
Daniel Spitzley has been appointed to the position of Principal at Doherty Elementary School. Mr. Spitzley’s appointment was confirmed at the July 21 West Bloomfield Board of Education special meeting. Mr. Spitzley will start his new position effective August 2.
Mr. Spitzley earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Group Social Studies from Grand Valley State University in 2011. He earned his Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership and K-12 Administration from Eastern Michigan University in 2017.
Mr. Sptizley comes to the West Bloomfield School District after working in Northville Public Schools since August 2012. While in Northville, Mr. Sptizley served as both a lower and upper elementary school teacher. He also gained administrative experience serving as the Principal of Summer School since 2018.
LARKIN APPOINTED AS PRINCIPAL OF SHEIKO ELEMENTARY
Ashleigh earned a Bachelor Arts in interdisciplinary studies in social sciences in 2008 from Michigan State University and her secondary teacher certification in social studies from Wayne State University in 2010. She also completed her Masters of Arts in teaching from Wayne State University in 2014 and began studying towards her education specialist certification in 2016 from Central Michigan University.
BORDERS APPOINTED AS HEAD OF SCHOOL OF OAKLAND EARLY COLLEGE
Morrison earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Health from Wayne State University in 2003 and his Masters in the Art of Teaching from Marygrove College in 2005. He also earned his Educational Specialist in Educational Leadership from Liberty University.
