Two ASD schools recognized for achievement
Two Anacortes schools were recently recognized for student achievement in standardized test results, preparedness, and gap-closing measures.
Anacortes High School has once again been named a “best high school” by U.S. News and World Report. AHS ranked 17th out of 310 high schools scored in Washington state, and 1,182nd out of 18,000 schools nationwide. Schools are ranked on students’ math and reading achievement; graduation rate; performance of non-white and low-income students; and college readiness.
AHS has a 66 percent participation rate in Advanced Placement tests and a 97 percent graduation rate. Overall, it scored 93 out of 100 points in the magazine’s annual ranking. It has consistently landed in the top 5 percent of the state’s high schools.
“We are proud of our students and staff for these achievements,” said AHS principal Jon Ronngren. “In the last few weeks especially, I have seen the dedication and commitment of our team, and this recognition reaffirms that.”
In a separate recognition, the State Board of Education recognized Mt Erie Elementary for success in closing the achievement gap. The State Board, through its school recognition program, recognized Mt Erie for closing gaps for one or more targeted student groups and for growth for students receiving special education services.
Specifically, Mt Erie showed achievement during the 2018-19 school year through improved test scores for Hispanic students and students receiving special education services.
“These scores reflect a real commitment on behalf of our staff to support all students,” said Mt Erie principal Kevin Schwartz. “While test scores don’t paint a complete picture of a student’s experience, I’m proud of the work we have done in closing some of these gaps.”
