Why Technology?
A Vision for 21st Century Teaching & Learning | Laredo ISD
Goals
- Understand & explore the why behind using technology at our campuses
- Experience hands on activities where technology plays a role in enhancing or transforming teaching & learning
- Discuss, question, brainstorm, challenge, and think about the teacher and student outcomes we hope to achieve (begin with the end in mind)
- Discuss planning process for increased tech-integration: LEAD Curriculum Doc
Start with the why
Activity: Start with the Why
Step 1: Watch first 5 minutes of Simon Sinek TED Talk, Start With Why.
Step 2: Discussion:
What stood out to you?
Simon says, “People don’t buy what you do they buy why you do it.” How do you think this idea applies to teaching & learning?
What makes you say that?
Complete this sentence stem: I think we can start with the why (with technology integration) by________.
- Share your sentence with our Today's Meet Room here.
A Day in Their Shoes
Activity: Prism Shared Reading
What do we want our students to be like?
Activity: Hexagonal Thinking
- Use the hexagon to respond to the big question: What do we want our students to be like?
- Get up, move around the room, looking for a place where your idea connects with another and place your hexagon accordingly. Have conversations with those around you about why you think it fits there.
- As you look at the hexagons and talk with those in the room, see if another idea comes to you. Use the extra hexagons around the room to add to the growing thinking map.
Reflection: Hexagonal Thinking
- Reflect on this activity. What did you notice about your thinking? How did your peers encourage, extend, or challenge your thinking?
- Complete this sentence stem: I made my thinking visible by____________.
- Share your sentence with the room here

Collaborative Doc
Step 2: Collaborate to come up with an example of each level of technology integration (be as specific as possible and include why you think this is an example of this level).
Dr. Reuben Puentedura | SAMR
Activity: SAMR Lesson
Work with your technology trainer to discuss the topic and why you think students might struggle.
Consider these three questions:
1. What is the student outcome/standard?
2. What thinking do I want to see from my students?
3. What technology tool could support the desired outcomes?
Step 2: Create a Haiku Deck account and create a presentation to include the outcomes, thinking, and tools involved in your lesson. Feel free to explore Haiku Deck and get creative.
Putting It Together
Activity: Chalk Talk
Chalk Talk: The Chalk Talk thinking routine* gives an opportunity for everyone’s voices to be heard. Each prompt will be written in the middle of a large piece of paper. Then, without speaking, everyone will walk around the tables and write responses to the prompts. The conversation continues, in writing, as participants respond to the comments of their peers. Here are a couple ideas to think on as you look at each prompt
What ideas come to mind when you consider this idea, question, or problem?
What connections can you make to others’ responses?
What questions arise as you think about the ideas and consider the responses and comments of others?
Here are the Prompts to consider:
Prompt 1: Why should we integrate technology into teaching & learning?
Prompt 2: What fears or worries might hold us back if we let them?
- Prompt 3: How could our campus build a culture where we feel safe to try things out?
