JJ Thomson
Atomic Theory Developer
Biography
Joseph John Thomson was born December 18, 1856 in England. As a child, he developed extraordinary abilities and a strong interest in Science. He was a highly gifted teacher, and mainly known for his exceptional work as a mathematician.
Discovering A Charge
JJ Thomson discovered the electron while experimenting with a Crookes, or cathode ray tube, in 1897. When the rays from cathode ray tube were deflected from electrically charged plates, he realized that there must be charged particles inside of the atom. To display this, he created a model using plum pudding, with the raisins being the negatively charged particles, (electrons) and the dough being the positive charge.
