March 2019 - Bernal Intermediate

Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Guardians:

A hearty welcome to the month of March from all of us at Bernal Intermediate School. To begin this month’s newsletter, I would like to acknowledge a very special Bernal staff member, Sandra Sustaita. “Miss” Sandra is an instructional aide in our special education department. Sandra's list of positive qualities is exhaustive so I will highlight a few. A key trait of a good school instructional aide is to be able to connect with students and teachers of a variety of needs and talents. In addition, an aide needs to be flexible, yet firm, friendly, and consistent. Sandra is all of that and more. We are thrilled to have her as a staff member at Bernal and can't thank her enough for all she does. Thank you Miss Sandra for all you do.

2019 California Distinguished School Award

I would like to congratulate Bernal students, teachers, staff and parents. On February 26, Bernal was named a 2019 California Distinguished School! Distinguished Schools are awarded for making exceptional gains English/Language Arts, Math, low discipline rates, and student attendance rates. Part of the award involves a school having to achieve exceptional student performance for two consecutive school years or closing the achievement gap between two school years. A lot of hard work, dedication and partnership went in to our success. As stated by Tony Thurmond, California State Superintendent of Public Instruction: “I would like to commend these schools for fighting for a better future for our students, closing achievement gaps, and improving academic performance,” Thurmond said. “Thanks to teachers, administrators, classified employees, and parents working together, these schools meet the needs of all of their students, provide high-quality educational experiences, and put kids on a pathway to great careers.” As the principal of Bernal, I am very proud and humbled to share this award with all of you as part of the Bernal community.
