Message from Principal Dorken

We look forward to our students being in person every day beginning on Wednesday, April 7 (remember 9:45am late start!), and to our first and second graders’ transition to full days at school. This new “Adapted in Person” schedule will be a positive and exciting step for all involved, but we will still be functioning in a manner that differs from pre-pandemic school conditions for health and safety reasons. Many of the procedures we have had in place (e.g., masks on, daily health self-assessments) will continue. The addition of lunch and recess times for first and second graders will add some new procedures. Related to those, please note:

  • Students can bring a lunch from home if a family prefers

  • Students who order lunch at school will not be charged a fee (a continuation of what has been in place during the pandemic)

  • Students will be eating lunch in homerooms with supervision. Masks will be off while students eat, then put back on. Individual tri-fold dividers will be used at each student seat while eating, and seats will be 6 feet apart for lunch

  • Recess will be held outside, weather permitting, in specifically assigned zones by class. Indoor recess, when necessary, will be held in non-homeroom spaces. In both cases, masks will be worn at all times.

For more details about Adapted in Person, this information was shared with our D34 community and our Board of Education on March 15, this section of the D34 website has additional information, and the April 1 edition of D34 Parent News is important to read thoroughly as well. As always, we welcome your questions and are here to support you, so please don’t hesitate to call the Lyon office (847-998-5045) anytime we can be of assistance.

And although our next school year is still several months away, our planning and preparations have already begun. Online registration for 2021-22 is now open, and we have already welcomed many incoming kindergarten families, as well as some new incoming first and second grade families. If you know of any friends or neighbors who need to connect with us for registration of first-time Lyon students, please send them our way. As current Lyon/Pleasant Ridge families, we hope you will help us by registering as early as you are able to do so! Call us if you have any questions or if we can help in any way with registration.

Later this spring, the Lyon staff and I will engage in our work to create the groups of children that will comprise our 2021-22 homeroom classes. The class placement process is one that takes considerable time and collaboration among our school team, and will not be truly finalized until August. In creating classes, we strive to take into account all that we have already learned regarding the social, emotional, academic and creative aspects of every child. Our goal is to form balanced, heterogeneous classes in which each child can succeed. If you have additional information that you feel is important for us to consider when placing your child in a class for next school year, please share it with me in writing (or email: no later than April 30th. Your thoughts about your child’s peer relationships and previous school experiences are certainly valued. Consistent with past practice at Lyon School, however, please know that we are unable to honor requests for specific teachers. If you have any questions about the class placement process, please give me a call.

Take care, be well, and enjoy spring with your family to the extent that you are safely able.

Message from Principal Friedman

Pleasant Ridge Families,

Happy Spring! I hope you all enjoyed spring break together as a family. Please make sure to read the email I sent earlier this week with notes about our transition to Adapted in Person starting next Wednesday. I appreciate you supporting this transition by talking with your children about what Adapted in Person (click to view) will look like. We are excited to welcome all our students back to school on a full time basis, and I anticipate a lot of excitement the coming weeks!

Please see a few timely notes below.

Stay healthy and be well!

Important Notes

  • Incoming 3rd Grade Parent Orientation- Mrs. Chin and I are working on updating our presentation for incoming families. Our goal is to share a video with families by the end of April/early May. Additionally, our 3rd grade team will be working with the Lyon 2nd grade teachers to facilitate Pen Pals. This is an opportunity for our current 3rd graders to connect with Lyon students and tell them a little bit about Pleasant Ridge. Mrs. Chin and I are also planning on visiting 2nd Grade classrooms this spring to introduce ourselves, share a bit about Pleasant Ridge, and answer any questions students may have at that time. More information to come on our transition plans.

  • 5th to 6th Grade Transition- In the coming weeks, both Attea and Springman will begin to reach out to our current 5th grade families with information and timelines on the transition process to middle school. Please note there will be opportunities for parents to provide input on their child’s transition, and the upcoming communication will direct families how to do so. Additionally, we hold translation meetings with middle school staff to help our students transition successfully.

  • Parent Input for the Upcoming School Year (Reminder)- A few weeks ago I shared a letter with families regarding our placement process for the upcoming school year. Parents are invited to provide me feedback via email if you have any insight or concerns you would like me to be aware of as we work through our placement process. Please provide me anything you’d like me to review by Wednesday, April 14th so we have that information available as we begin our placement process. Thank you.

  • Student Math Placements (21-22)- For the 2021-2022 school year math placements can be found in the parent portal of PowerSchool. Once you are logged into your child’s account, click on “Math Placement.” If you have any questions, please email the District Math Coach, Jennifer Bergeron, at . You can also visit the District 34 website to learn more about the math program and our math identification process.
