Selby Public School
February Newsletter
News & Notes
The best way to approach this type of weather is to embrace it. Thanks to Parent Council and the organization of Mrs. Sutcliffe, we now have two skating trips and a Winter Play Day to look forward to in February!
This past week, Selby hosted local schools for an Intermediate Floor Hockey tournament, and our Junior team was off to Tamworth for a great day of healthy competition. Thank you to Mrs. Sutcliffe, Mr. Hill and Mrs. Kemp for their hard work coaching and organizing. Our basketball teams have also started preparing for their upcoming tournaments, under the guidance of Mr. Craig, Mr. Scott and Mrs. Ruttan. Staff volunteer their own time to make these opportunities happen, which we continue to appreciate.
Please read on for information about some exciting initiatives at both the school and Board level, including the launch of Online Registration, and a Parent Engagement Grant in Math that we are thrilled to get started on!
Have a fabulous February...

MAKERSPACE
We are continuing to seek volunteers from our Selby School community who would be willing to help us in the "Maker Space" this winter and spring. We would like to run month-long sessions, twice each week for interested students, with a focus on the following skills:
- sewing (both hand and with a machine)
- cooking and baking
- movie making
- sound recording
- knitting / crocheting
- carpentry
- programming and coding
- working with electricity/electronics
- works of art both 2 and 3 dimensional
- robotics
- photography
- book making
We will supply the materials and tools (for the most part) we just need your expertise and guidance! We would ask for your help once or twice per week (depending on the number of volunteers) from 11:00 to 12:00 or from 1:00 to 2:00, for one month (we will select the months as we receive responses). You will require a valid CPIC in order to volunteer (these can be obtained free of charge with a form from Mrs. Gallagher).
We would really love to have our extended family and community join us in this endeavor! Students are eager to get started in the space and look forward to learning from you! Don't worry, you will not be left alone to teach entire classes of students, our staff will be there too!
If you would like to volunteer your time, or if you know someone who is interested, please contact the school and leave your name, number and area of expertise. You can send a note with your child or contact the office.
Thank you so much for your help!

PARENT COUNCIL
Please consider joining our Parent Council this year! Parent Council is an essential part of our school community. They fund-raise tirelessly for our school which allows us to greatly improve the learning environment for our students. They put on exciting events, and are involved in important discussions about Selby Public School. They represent the voice of our parent community.
Our next meeting is Thursday, February 15th, at 6:00 pm. Babysitting will be provided! While the Council very much needs members who can volunteer at events and help out with fund-raising, anyone is welcome to attend meetings, even if it's just to listen. We hope to see you soon!
Parent Council have started a Facebook page for sharing information - please "like" it at https://www.facebook.com/selbyschoolPAC/ to receive updates.
