As part of the BYOD initiative in HSE, a thoughtful group of teachers, parents, and administrators investigated and selected some outstanding electronic resources that have been purchased as technology tools for our classrooms. Most of these electronic resources are now available to teachers and students. So, now you may find yourself wondering, "How do I merge these online leveled texts and periodicals into my classroom while keeping my workshop focused on reading books, talking about books, and writing about books?"

I lean on the Katie Mutharis and Katie Ziemke, authors of the book, Amplify: Digital Teaching and Learning in the K-5 Classroom to help answer this question. Chapter 3 of Amplify encourages teachers to strive to connect new technology to existing best practice. They offer great advice to help us avoid simply assigning students to tools and rather amplify student interaction:

  • Modeling is essential - students must be explicitly taught HOW to read online texts. (There is a great list of mini-lessons on page 48.)

  • Be sure the using tool helps the students, and doesn't slow learners down or impede the deep thinking required for reading.

  • Be intentional about how you present texts to students; there is a time for digital texts and a time for books and paper. The tool kiddos are asked to read with should match the purpose.

  • Use digital tools to include all learners and differentiate instruction.

  • Design opportunities that allow students to collaborate while using the digital resources.

The vision of technology integration in HSE21 is focused on students using technology tools to support inquiry, to create, and to share ideas with authentic audiences. This means we may have to explore the possibilities beyond the tool when using more consumption focused tools like online text and periodicals.

My favorite quote from Amplify Chapter 3: "We're not going to tell you to jump in and everything will be fine. It might be fine, it might be mind-blowing, or it might fall flat. Change is hard, and occasional flops are to be expected. But there are some ways to ensure that we're connecting these new ideas and tools to solid practices that have been proven to make a difference in student learning." Embrace your growth mindset! Share your flops and your mind-blowing successes! And know that I am here to partner with you and work alongside you in this journey.
