"Breaking Down Cultural Barriers"

We're excited to offer an opportunity to our Franklin Staff & Families (as well as other Cedar Rapids Community Members) to take part in a learning session titled, "Breaking Down Cultural Barriers". Part of our CRCSD Strategic Plan is an Intercultural Mindset. The Franklin Staff has used the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) as part of our professional learning to learn about ourselves and areas of growth. During the session, led by Hilario Benzon from the National Education Association of Human and Civil Rights Department, will lead us through the following topics:

  • What is Implicit Bias?
  • What are Microaggressions?
  • What are Stereotypes?

Light snacks and beverages will be provided in addition to free child care. We hope you can come join us.

Open House Summary

Thanks to those families who attended our first annual Franklin Open House on Tuesday, September 17. Our goal is to make this an annual event. With that said, we appreciate your feedback on how we can improve to get an even better turnout. Please take a couple minutes to fill out the brief form below.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Fall Parent-Teacher Conferences are right around the corner. During the week of October 7, families will receive a letter through US Mail inviting them to conferences along with instructions to sign-up for times to visit with their students/families. Families will have the capability to sign-up for 2-10 minute conferences. The dates for conferences are:

  • Wednesday, October 23 from 3:00-6:00PM
  • Thursday, October 24 from 3:00-8:00PM

Be on the lookout for the letter. We hope to see you.

Winter Sports

As we wind down one sports' season, we begin another. See the information below for information about the upcoming seasons.

  • Girls Swimming: Coach Mercedes Hayes (Practice begins Wednesday, October 9)
  • Boys' Basketball: 7th: Coach Ben Ethier/8th: Coach Scott Brune (Practice begins Thursday, October 17)

Students will need an updated physical and all signed forms before being allowed to practice. If a student participated in a fall sport, all forms will transfer over to their next coach/sport.

Fundraiser Updates

We'd like to thank all the families who participated in this year's fundraiser, especially as we worked through the glitches at the beginning. We are working on the final outcome for money raised, but wanted to communicate out a couple important dates for upcoming events related to the fundraiser.

  • Tuesday, October 15: Day of Awesomeness @ Franklin from 1:00-2:30
  • Tuesday, October 22: Franklin Night @ SkyZone from 5:00-9:00PM. Students who turned in their golden ticket received a free hour.

PTA Updates

Next Meeting: Monday, October 14 from 11:00-12:00

Bolt Closet

We had a very successful first year of opening the Franklin Bolt Closet. For families new to Franklin, this closet provides new and gently used clothing, new socks and underwear and all personal hygiene care items for the underserved students who are part of the Franklin family. We protect the students’ privacy by only having the counseling and health center staff know who utilizes the closet. Monthly we will feature one item the closet is in need of.

For September, we are accepting NEW socks and NEW underwear in both child and adults sizes.

We also accept monetary donations and have volunteer shoppers for the Bolt Closet. Thank you for your support and helping to ensure every student comes to school clean, appropriately dressed and ready to learn!

Agenda & Budget Items

See the agenda from our September meeting in addition to our budget. We welcome all parents to our PTA meetings. They take place the first Monday of every month from 11:00-12:00. If you're not able to attend the meetings, we encourage you to get involved by helping with our concessions and other sign-ups. Stay tuned for future communication involving these.

Announcements

Does this conversation sound familiar?

- Parent: "What'd you do today at school?"

- Student: "Nothing"

- Parent: "Is there anything I should know about going on at school?"

- Student: "Nope"

If this is occurring at your house, check out the two links below that will take you to ways we communicate announcements to students. These same announcements are read during the school day; both morning and afternoon.
