Mission Possible! - October 21, 2016
Thank you from your FMS EXPLO Team!
STUDENT-LED CONFERENCES!
Mr. Chapman
From the Art Room
Welcome new sixth graders! This week we will be getting familiar with the Art room and diving into learning about Value Scales, and Shading. We will learn some basic drawing techniques, and learning about line.
7th Graders are working on figure design and creating their own comic book hero using their chromebooks. They are then designing their own comic book cover panels on paper. We are focusing on composition and following directions.
8th Graders are storyboarding their books, and are continuing their project from last week. This project as I stated before, will takes us several weeks, but they all seem to be moving along nicely.
What a fantastic year we are having so far, and I hope to keep the positive momentum going in the Art Room, these talented kids are really stepping it up this year, and we are growing and showing great things as young artists.
Thanks for all your support at home!
Artfully yours,
Mr Chapman

7th and 8th graders their keyboarding this week. Their typing goals are 28 WPM for 7th grade, and 31 WPM for 8th grade. Many students have already met these goals. Students were instructed if they did not meet their minimum goals this week, he/she were encouraged to practice at home as well. They may practice anytime at typingtraining.com. Students can even use their Chromebooks to practice anywhere they have a connection. They all have their login information. If you have any issues logging on at home, please email me. You can monitor your child's progress at home and school by going to the reports menu after they have logged into Typing Training.
In addition to typing 7th and 8th grade completed Challenge 5 with the Sphero balls (see pictures and video below) and learned about formatting functions using MS Word.

6th grade band: The 6th grade band just finished up their VERY FIRST concert! Ms. Neudecker and I are so proud of what they have accomplished so far. With a new term comes new responsibility, we will be pushing the 6th graders to learn new concepts. We will be working on new notes, new rhythms and instrument specific concepts. To master these concepts EVERY student will need to be taking their instrument home and practicing. The students will start having playing quizzes, the only way to be successful on playing quizzes is to practice. Thank you for the continued support of the music program, we are so proud of each and every one of them!
7th grade band: 7th grade band will begin to retake playing quizzes since we have finished with the concert. The students performed well and we are very proud of the success that they have had thus far. In the future we need your help with encouraging your student to practice at home. A common problem that we have in this class is not practicing, hindering the performance ability of the students. Please encourage your students to do their part in the band and learn their parts at home. Thank you for your continued support of the FMS band program, we look forward to the next concert,
8th grade band: The 8th graders just got done with an EXTREMELY successful concert. I am so proud of these students. They have worked so hard and every single one of them has taken time to practice at home and make themselves better. The class just finished chair testing and were placed in their chairs, there were some extremely hard choices for me to make. Students have the ability to challenge students in chairs above them, and there will be more information sent home.
7th and 8th grade wire choir: Wire choir is starting our next round of pre and post tests for chord progressions. They have done really well and I am so proud of each and every one of them.
Cherrydale orders will be ready for pickup on November 17.
As always if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact us via email at sglynn@fulton58.org or kneudecker@fulton58.org.

HORNET SINGERS:
Hornet Singers...though they be but few, they be mighty!
It's been great getting to know these students voices as we navigate the world of choral singing. We've been busy building our sight-reading skills and applying our "do, re, mi's" to our concert repertoire.
We've also been busy training our ears to singing in an ensemble setting and we will put those skills to test Monday, Oct 24th at First Baptist Church, Fulton: 7pm. A letter outlining concert details for students was sent home with students and emailed home as well. Please be sure to go over the details in the letter with your child. Students will arrive at 5:40pm with attendance taken at 5:45pm. This is our only chance to practice the combined choirs piece with grades 7-12.
Hope to see you Monday night!
ALL students will need a choir polo to go along with their student provided khaki pants and black closed-toe shoes. Please make sure you are getting these items asap so there isn't a last minute stress placed on you or the child when concert time arrives (Oct. 24).
The choir handbook and schedule is online for your perusal anytime. (www.fulton58.org)
HARMONY HORNETS:
We had yet another great rehearsal last Tuesday and we are SO EXCITED to meet once again this Tuesday! Our amazing group is made up of a mixture of 6th-8th grade (7th/8th band or guitar members) and has great energy and interest in making great music. Rehearsals are every Tuesday from 3:20 - 4:15 in the FMS choir room (G07).
This group will not make it's debut for the year until December but we would love to see them as audience members at the Fall Vocal Concert on Oct. 24th!
If you ever have any questions, concerns, or comments, feel free to contact me at llehman@fulton58.org.
HORNET PRIDE:
Hornet Pride Choir is preparing for our first concert! We hope to see you there, Monday, October 24th at First Baptist. Students must be at the church at 5:40pm! We will take attendance at 5:45, and begin our rehearsal. This is our ONLY chance to practice the song that we will be singing with ALL the choirs grades 7-12!
PLEASE REMEMBER that choir members MUST be in uniform at ALL of our performances this year. You may purchase the required polo shirt by bring $13 ($15 for XL) to Dr. Moebes. You will receive a receipt for your payment.
ARTS ALIVE:
I can't believe it's already time for a new group of amazing 6th graders to begin Arts Alive! We are off to a great start. We've done some "get to know you" activities, so I can learn a bit more about each student. We have already begun our focuses on singing, and rhythm! We have started practicing the fundamentals of proper singing technique, and have started playing our rhythm game "Jump In/Jump Out!"
Foreign Cultures
The first rotation of Foreign Cultures classes finished out the term with a "Taste Test of Asia" celebration. We sampled treats from several countries in Asia.
We also wrapped up by watching and discussing an interview recorded by Jo Incicco, a native of Argentina! The video is available below for you to watch, and discuss with your students. We are truly grateful that Jo took the time to answer a few of the questions our classes had for her.
Careers
Careers 8 finished the term nicely by visiting FEC! Our class split up in 7 groups so we could visit each of the classrooms as well as the daycare! FMS students rad books they wrote about careers that they would like to pursue. FEC and FMS students had the chance to learn about each other through play as well! A few pictures of our field trip are posted below.

Mr. Jackson
What Does it Cost?
That is typically the primary question we always have when it comes to acquiring something new. Learning is no different, it will cost us something to be successful. For our students it may cost some social time, it may cost a couple hours on the video games, it may cost missing watching a game, you get the idea.
To grow it will often cost us something else; it is an incredible principle to adopt that sometimes you have to say no to good things to say yes to the best things. With the amount of information and resources available online today, there is no reason we don't excel at anything we ever have an interest in.
What if:
- Your student wanted to learn Portuguese rather than beat Call of Duty
- Your student learned international studies rather than whatever the Kardashians are doing
- Your student learned microbiology and cured cancer rather than following Drake's last Snapchat story
(You get the point) The reality is our biggest limitations are ourselves and our lack of willingness to forgo the good for the best. Encourage your student in choosing the best over the good, be willing to pay whatever the cost is to achieve greatness. In the education field we always talk about how "magical" reading can be (and it can be), but what we really hope is that it is a tool to help unlock greatness inside of our students.
"The day has to go from external to internal.
You have to give it everything you’ve got!
No more TV.
No more parties.
No more playing.
If you don’t have a 4.0,
What you need to be doing is studying."
– Eric Thomas, Secrets To Success Speech – Part 2
