Sister Alphonse Academy Newsflash!
30/April/2021
Dear Sister Alphonse Academy Families!
Dear Parents/Guardians:
We have enjoyed a great week of exciting learning and community building at SAA. Thank you to all parents and legal guardians who participated in the Alberta Education Assurance survey. We appreciate your support and feedback! Thank you as well to all of the families who joined us in our Junior High information session that took place this past Wednesday. Registration is open to students from K - 9.
This past week our students continued to work hard at their studies through engaging in many project based learning opportunities in addition to pursuing projects of their choice in our Career and Technology Foundation options.
As we enter into May, we remember that May is a month to consider praying the "Hail Mary" and the rosary as we pray to Mary, Jesus' holy mother. With Mother's Day approaching, we are considering ways to appreciate mothers in our community.
Students and staff took part in celebrating Administrative Professionals Day on Wednesday, April 28th! Students wrote many happy messages of thanks to office staff, educational assistants, lunch supervisors and custodians. We truly appreciate all of the hard work they do in making Sister Alphonse Academy such a special place to be.
Take care, God bless and have a great weekend.

Walk a mile in my shoes - CSS for vulnerable youth
We are excited to be using our United Way grant of $1000 and some of our Break a Rule Day proceeds to purchase new sneakers for vulnerable youth! We are also holding a New/gently used Sneakers drive for youth that is being led by Mrs. Trenchard's Grade three class!
If you have new/gently used runners to contribute, please send them to school over the next two weeks. This sneaker drive will run from April 26 - May 7, 2021. All safety protocols will take place as the shoes are gathered for donation. Gerald from CSS will be picking up the items shortly after our collection date, at which time we will be able to connect with him virtually once again!
Our students are excited about being able to create hope filled messages which will be included with the sneakers. As Knights, we are Arising Up! to make a difference and live like Jesus!

Safe Arm Bussing Technology
NEW technology being installed on our GSACRD RURAL route buses. All but 3 routes are already up and operational with the technology and the other 3 will be completed within the next 2 weeks.
This new technology is called a Predictive Stop arm. This technology will increase student safety around the bus in the Rural areas. In particular for those students who must cross the road to get to or from their bus stop location. Please see the attached brochure below which will help families learn more about this system. Parents you may choose to discuss this with your child/children regarding what to do when this system sends the warning "DANGER GET BACK"
Thank you!

Spring Bike Safety Message
Student Health & Safety
With students away from school during spring break, we are reminding students of the Covid-19 safety related protocols that are in place. Please help your child remember all of the expectations as this keeps all of us safe in school.
On August 4, grades 4-12 students and all staff have been asked to wear masks and mask use will be mandatory in common areas and when physical distancing of 2m is not possible. K-3 students are not required to wear masks, but mask use is encouraged as much as possible. Masks are to be worn while riding the bus as well.
Additional hand sanitizer dispensers have been installed in every school and division office and additional hand sanitizer has been provided to schools to enable individuals to practice good hand hygiene.
It is recommended that individual-sized hand sanitizer bottles be purchased for your children so that they have this with them throughout the day. If you need to purchase another one for Monday please do so. Thank you.
Students please bring your own water bottle to school and do not share them. Water fountains will remain open and be cleaned regularly.
All students are asked to wear a mask to wear upon entry at school and when riding a school bus. Teachers will provide mask breaks. Prior to the break, students needed more reminders of continuing to do this so let’s have a new start again.
Grades 4 - 9 students: Please remember to wear your mask at all times when walking in the classroom and/or hallway and continue to maintain physical distance between one another.
During the spring season we will also be conducting a few more fire drills. The procedures and protocols will be reviewed with staff and students prior to the drill. Thank you!
Message from the City of St. Albert: Woodlands Skatepark
Hello, community partner,
Woodlands Skatepark is one of the City’s premiere recreation facilities, built for the enjoyment and abilities of all users within our community. The City and the RCMP have received complaints that users of the Skatepark are not following the 2 metre physical distancing rules, as required by the province. The City is legally required to follow all provincial public health orders in order for our facilities to remain open and operational and is taking additional steps to ensure all users understand how to use the Skatepark responsibly during the pandemic, while enjoying this great amenity.
We ask that you share this message in the community through your channels.
- Due to the increased use of the Skatepark, please adhere to the following guidelines:
- Maintain at least 2 metres physical distance from other users at all times, especially at the top of the bowl
- If too crowded to keep 2 metres from others, come back at another time
- Limit your stay, so others can enjoy the facility
- Be respectful of any requests by City staff, RCMP or Municipal Enforcement Services
- Everyone has a responsibility to follow public health measures and to keep each other safe.
- Failure to adhere to these guidelines may result in additional limitations to this facility.
Thank you,
Daniele Podlubny

SAFETY PROTOCOL STUDENT RE-ENTRY REMINDERS
Before coming to school each day, all staff and students must complete the Alberta government’s COVID-19 Information Screening Questionnaire, which is available in multiple languages, to determine whether they can attend or must stay home. The form does not need to be submitted to the office. If your child has any symptoms, contact your school office to let your child’s school know. Everyone who enters a school will see a sign that reminds them to complete the daily COVID-19 Information Screening Questionnaire before entering the building.
Please remember to bring with you all of your books and supplies that are needed for school on Monday morning. Monday is a regular, full day of classes.
Please remember that we have four entrances for students. When you arrive at school please report to the same school door that you were using before the Christmas break.
Students with pre-existing health conditions that cause symptoms of illness should be tested for COVID-19 at least once before returning to school. A negative test will help show that symptoms are related to their pre-existing conditions, and not to COVID-19. This will establish what their baseline for being healthy looks like. Families should notify their school about any pre-existing condition and the symptoms it causes. As long as these symptoms remain the same, the student can attend school.
Approved cleaning protocols have been put in place in all Division buildings. Custodial staff have been trained to identify high touch areas and to know how to clean, sanitize, and disinfect them.
If your child becomes ill at school, your child will be placed in a safe space until you or your emergency designate picks up your child.
Lunch Hour: All students in the elementary and junior high school need to eat their lunch in their own classrooms. We have always had this guideline in place, but students needed a few reminders to adhere to this prior to the break. Students in Junior High who are leaving the building for lunch please follow all safety protocols with masks use, physical distancing and sanitization upon exit and entry.
Junior High - Nutrition break: You are to eat your snack at your desk in your classroom. If you would like to go for a short walk in the school, wear your mask and continue to maintain a physical distance of two metres while walking.
Gym use - Students will have grade cohort assigned time to use the gym. Please listen for the announcements for your day of use.
SIGIS Childcare available
Please note that we have SIGIS Childcare within our building at SAA! If you are in need of before school or after school childcare, please read some information below. This may be a convenient service you may be interested in. Thank you.
