From PCMS to Cuba
“I don’t think I could live without crafting, flipping and watching TV.” Spoken with the sheer honesty of an 11-year old who is wise beyond her years.
After competing in gymnastics for six years, Daryn Wright grew tired of the sport, so she decided to try diving. Now just two years later, she’ll stand on the 3M Springboard in Cuba, diving for the US Junior Pan American Team.
When asked about the transition from gymnastics to diving, she giggled and said, “I had to really think about it for a while, because in diving you go head first. If you land on your head in gymnastics, it’s really bad.”
As a member of the Indiana International School of Diving, Daryn is part of a Hoosier group that, while united by their team, is separated by miles and pools. Teammates live all over the state, and practice at the nearest high school or college, with the elite divers also using the nearest platform or tower. For Daryn, that was the Natatorium at IUPUI, but since it’s being completely renovated, she’s now chasing diving time throughout Central Indiana, having even gone as far as Miami of Ohio. But, as she puts it, ‘at least if I decide to go to Purdue or UIndy or Miami of Ohio for college, I’ll already know my way around!’
The PCMS 6th grader is making sacrifices to compete at the elite level, but she’s also enjoying as normal of a middle school experience as is possible. “The other night, I knew I had to practice my clarinet, so I asked Mom if I could do it in the car on the way to practice,” said Daryn. Mom, Christie, said that was fine, while she concentrated on avoiding bumps in the road. “I didn’t want to hit a bump and then have her clarinet jam into her mouth!” she explained.
Daryn is quick to add, though – the fun outweighs the sacrifices. “I’ve met so many people from all around the world. Sometimes I train at the same pool as Olympian David Boudia, and he’s really nice. And right now there are three other Plainfield students competing with the same club. Even though I travel a lot, I’m still with friends and people I know really well.”
Even though Daryn is the only diver in the family, older siblings Andie and Derek keep Mom and Dad (Todd) hopping as well. Between band and tennis, their lives are in constant motion. But this close-knit family is focused on normalcy. “Daryn can do this as long as she wants, as long as it’s fun,” said Christie. And for the 11-year old girl who loves to flip, that could be a long time.
