A Note From Nurse Richman
Hi all South Union families-
We have been having a lot of students sick with colds, flu and other nasty bugs so wanted to sent out this reminder about Preventive Actions that Promoted good Health.
Please read and if you have any questions about when to keep your child home from school, feel free to call.
Everyday Preventive Actions That Promote Good Health
· Please keep sick children home. If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
· Teach children to cover their noses and mouths with a tissue when they cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue away after use and wash your hands. If a tissue is not available, cover your mouth and nose with your sleeve, not your hand.
· Remind children to wash their hands often with soap and water, especially after they cough or sneeze. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
· Encourage kids to avoid touching their eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread this way.
· Dress for the weather. Our students go outside for recess when the weather permits. Please make sure that they are prepared to play outdoors: hats, gloves, coats, etc.
· Visit with your healthcare provider about flu shots.
Guidelines to help decide if your child is too sick to be at school..
Some guidelines to follow in deciding if your child is too sick to be in school include:
An oral temperature of 101 degrees F. unless there is a known noninfectious cause of the fever. The school nurse may send your child home at a lower temperature if there are other symptoms of an illness that could possibly spread to others. People need to be fever free 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medications before returning to school.
Illness that disrupts the students learning or poses a risk of the disease spreading to others.
Illness that results in a greater need for care than the staff can provide without affecting the health and safety of other children.
Repeated vomiting or diarrhea.
An undiagnosed rash associated with fever or behavior changes that suggest the presence of a contagious illness.
