Thoughts to Ponder: The Value of Open House
Open House is this week and we look forward to having you all here. I know many of you and have sat in meetings with most of you but this is a chance to come in and make sure we are off to the right start for the year.
In an article published by Parenting Magazine, author Amanda Boyarshinov discusses several questions to ask and not to ask. I have condensed them here:
Topics to discuss
Scheduling
Knowing your child's schedule is so important for a variety of reasons.
Knowing when recess time is scheduled is also important.
How to best contact the teacher
I have always been surprised during Meet the Teacher that teachers don't give out their e-mail addresses or even an idea of when is best to contact them. Every year, I've learned how to connect with the teachers and when we will be receiving homework folders and teacher newsletters during open house.
Classroom expectations
Teachers will often refer you to school policy and explain how they keep track of behaviors in their classroom. This may be in the form of notebooks, charts or flipping cards. Each teacher has his or her special way.

I strongly believe being connected to each one of you if VERY important to creating a positive team that encourages your child in their education goals. If you are unable to come on Thursday to Open House, I would love to find another time for us to visit on the phone or in person.
Homework
Reading for information and sequencing are two important literacy skills. Students will get some practice in these this week.
Reading
Our younger students will start new books this week. They will be working on question words, ending punctuation, visualizing what they read and summarizing. These students will also be getting additional help on Lexia lessons in the areas of sightwords and silent e construction.
