Benton Weekly Update

Week 16: December 7-11, 2020

9 Days and counting!

One of the most unusual semesters of school ever is coming to a close in 9 days. Students should be wrapping up projects, studying for final exams, and making sure all work is completed and turned in by the end of this week.

Open Enrollment for NLMUSD schools has begun and will continue through the end of January. Benton will host a Virtual Orientation for parents on Tuesday, December 15th. (See flyer below) If you have friends or neighbors who have children starting middle school, be sure to let them know that in addition to a strong academic program with honors courses, Benton is the destination for the Arts!

We know that with the closure of Los Coyotes, many parents are considering which school is the best fit to meet their child's needs. For anyone who would like to learn more about Benton, we are offering Virtual Tours and are eager to share about our wonderful programs and staff!

8th Graders are still able to explore the programs at La Mirada High School at this link. Please make sure your 8th grader has submitted their registration form by the end of this week.

  • The PTSA will continue to collect clothing all year, donations can be placed in the green and white USAgain bin located near the big sliding gate in the school parking lot.

Cutting Class Virtual Learning-Style

Has your child been cutting class? Do they log into their Zoom class, turn the video off, and then go do something else? Too often teachers hear the excuse, 'my mom needed me to do the dishes' or 'we had to go somewhere'. This has become routine for some students and so to help students fully engage in learning and their classes, teachers will begin requiring students to leave the video on during class. Have you seen your child's Schoology Profile Picture? Does it look like them? Teachers are trying to get to know their students and make a connection with them. Help your child take a new picture of themself and upload it to their profile. This will help teachers get to know the real student, and not just a virtual one.

Spotlight on Learning

Intermediate Chorus Performs

Benton's Intermediate Chorus is seen here performing with Fresno City College Symphonic choir in their virtual performance of Hope Lingers On. Chorus Teacher Ms. Naomi Gamez, "They worked really hard given our current circumstances [distance learning] and I am very proud of their dedication. Hope you enjoy!"
Hope Lingers On by Lissa Scheneckenburger, arr. Andrea Ramsey

Music Students' First Performance

First-year music students recently participated in the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation's First Performance National Day of Celebration, marking the milestone of their very first ever musical performance! Students performed short etudes from their method books for family members at home and uploaded videos of their performances to Schoology. Hearing families clap and cheer for their young performers and seeing the smile on these outstanding novice musician's faces reminds Mr. Summers and Ms. Gamez why we do what we do.

Pearl Harbor Day 12/7

On National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, we remember the 2,403 service members and civilians who perished during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. And we honor the many heroes who saved countless more lives on that dark day.

Log into your period 7B Zoom 9-10, then work on other assignments, projects, homework, iReady or reading from 10am-2pm.

International Human Rights Day 12/10

Created by the United Nations, this day promotes awareness of the importance of Human Rights issues around the world. On this date in 1948, the UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Hanukkuh Dec. 10-18

The eight-day Jewish celebration known as Hanukkah commemorates the rededication during the second century B.C. of the Second Temple in Jerusalem where according to legend, Jews had risen up against their Greek-Syrian oppressors in the Maccabean Revolt. Hanukkah, which means “dedication” in Hebrew, begins on the 25th of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar and usually falls in November or December. Often called the Festival of Lights, the holiday is celebrated with the lighting of the menorah, traditional foods, games and gifts.
