FROM OUR ADMINISTRATOR

Happy Summer, Harbor Light Christian School Family!

I am pleased to share that while the students have been away from school for just over a month and a half this summer, the staff has been working diligently to prepare for their return in September. Katherine Johnson, our new director of elementary education, has been in the office setting plans to help prepare students and teachers for a successful year. Josh Ernst, our new athletic director, has been hard at work learning his new roles and has rolled out a newly updated Athletics website and Facebook page. It has been fun to witness adjustments and changes unfold throughout the summer!

Our facilities director, Alan Beyer, and his team, along with many volunteers at work bees, have worked hard to make some creative adjustments to ensure a quality learning environment for all students this coming year! We will have clear maps at the beginning of the year to help everyone find their way to the right classrooms!

A highlight of the major changes:

  • Kindergarten is moving to the former science room, E-18. This will allow students to have lockers inside the classroom and a bathroom right off the classroom.

  • Our elementary hallway (North wing) will be home to 1st through 5th-grade students, and 6th grade is moving to the former kindergarten room, W-1.

  • High school students will have classes in the West hallway. Additionally, some smaller classes will meet in the former kitchen and teachers' lounge.

  • The planned timeline to get students into the Solid Rock Center is January 2023. We will not start the year with students in the new space, but we have identified temporary spaces for each class. Science class will meet in the old teacher's lounge, Music class will meet in the Summit, and Art will meet in the balcony during non-lunch times.

  • There is still much work to be completed before school starts: hallways will be painted, and we have new lockers on their way.

Please feel free to stop in and check the progress. I would be happy to show you around!

We are so excited to welcome five new teachers to classrooms this fall. Please check out their video below. We are still looking for the right people to fill our newly opened positions in 4th grade, Physical Education, and one section of high school English. Please see the links to the job postings below.

Finally, I want to remind you it is not too late to participate in our summer Bible challenge. There are similar challenges for elementary and middle and high school students. We are excited for you to dig into God’s word!

I am praying for rest, joy, and lots of memories being made over the next month and a half for each of your families. In His service,

Kelly Dutcher

Lots of Renovations Happening

Check out some of the massive remodeling that is going on in just about every square inch of our building! We are moving things and adjusting spaces to accommodate more students and staff!

Solid Rock Center Update

July in the Solid Rock has been hopping with activity! Plumbers, electricians, flooring installers and more have been diligently working around the clock to help the project continue to move forward. We are hoping to hold classes and athletic events in the Solid Rock by January of 2023, or sooner.

As we enter the 4th quarter of this project both construction-wise and in terms of fundraising, we still have some needs to be met. To finish the interior with equipment and technology, we are planning to raise $400,000 this fiscal year. There is still time to get your name in the Legacy Gym or one of the other naming areas. As some projects go, once you get into the space and realize the initial idea was good, but there may be a better way to do things. We have extra Pistons floor pieces and have decided to install them on the wall in the Legacy Gym to display the names of those who have poured into the project. This will eliminate most wear and tear and allow us to continue adding names to our story wall as needed. We will still be reaching out to all of our givers to verify their naming, which we are rolling out next week. Please look for an email from Jennie with details.

Thank you for walking along this journey with us, we are nearly at the final finish line and cannot wait to share in a celebration of its completion with you.

Please contact Jennie Cope with questions at 231-347-7859 ext. 25 or jcope@harborlight.org.

NEW! HLCS Sponsorship Opportunities

The Athletics Department and the Development office have been hard at work this summer finding ways to connect our local businesses to the school and provide value to our community.

We are happy to announce a pilot sponsorship program called the Community Business Partnership. If you or anyone you know would be interested in partnering with the school as a marketing opportunity, or simply as a way to support the school, please click below for more information.
