Handbook Highlight: Unexcused Absences
Unexcused absences are those where the school has received no verbal or written communication from the parent/guardian as to why the child is not in school. This also includes any absences determined to be unnecessary by school administration. When a student has seven unexcused, or an excessive number of excused absences from school, Sibley County Human Services will be notified.
The following are examples of absences/tardies which may be considered unexcused: Truancy (an absence by a student which was not approved by the parent/guardian and/or the school district), work at home, work at a business (except under a school-sponsored work release program), parent/guardian related work obligations, oversleeping/sleeping in, car trouble, shopping, hair appointment, missing the bus, if suspended from the school district transportation and the child does not come to school, and absences resulting from accumulated unexcused tardies (3 tardies equals one unexcused absence).
The school may also request information from medical personnel in order to excuse excessive student absences that are due to illness. If no documentation from medical personnel is provided, then the absences may be marked unexcused.
