A message from our Counselor Ms. Fox!
Helping Each Other
In our Wednesday Class Meeting this week, we reviewed students’ Circles of Support from last week, along with the helpful strategies of gratitude, helping others, and talking to a trusted person when facing a difficult situation. We also talked about a quote by Anthropologist Margaret Mead about the power of helping others through hard times — in fact, how that is an important marker of civilization.
We taught the Signs of Suicide lesson to our 7th and 8th graders this week, and I thought of this quote. As a school community, we talked about mental health, the importance of telling a trusted adult if a student is concerned about themselves or a friend, and the great news that depression and mental health conditions are treatable. As always, we described the many sources of support at Stanwood Middle School. We followed up with students who indicated that they would like to speak with someone further after the lesson.
Please reach out to us if you have questions about anything at all, and certainly if you have concerns about your child. We are here to help.

The Final Three Weeks
There are just 16 days left of this "unprecedented" school year. As students work toward finishing strong in their classes, we want to remind all Spartans to check with their teachers about due dates, and keep the lines of communication open. It is never too late to start and have a good finish.
Registration for 2021-22 School Year
Ms. Christmas sent an email on Thursday with all of the information for registration for next year. We will be registering all current 6th and 7th grade students for next year's electives on Tuesday for the AA cohort and Thursday for the BB cohort during social studies classes. All students will need to know their preferred choices for electives next year, as well as alternate choices. Please contact our office with any questions.
Last Week for Sports
This is our last week for conditioning sports. Our Track and Field group will meet at the high school at 2:45 on Wednesday for a special two-hour session.
MAP Testing
We will finish MAP testing in math classes this week and will do ELA MAP testing on June 3 and June 7.
8th Grade Celebration!
We will hold a drive through celebration for the class of 2025 on Monday, June 14 from 3:00-5:00 p.m.
Chromebook return
Please make a note that we will be collecting all hotspots, chromebooks, and chargers at the end of the school year. More information about how/when to turn in all devices will be coming soon.
Class Meetings--Moving to just one a week
We will meet again as one school for class meetings this week. All grade levels can join the Google Meet using the code SMS for a quick check in, a good character strong lesson, and have any questions answered.
Extra Help is Available
On Monday/Tuesday/Thursday/Friday students can log into Google Meet using either the code SMOT or DAVI to work with either Mrs. Smothermon or Mrs. Davidson for help on any work. Also, on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., students can use the code PALM for help from Mrs. Palmer.
Have a great weekend!

Principal
Stanwood Middle School
Reminders we have sent previously:
Please make sure your student, especially 6th graders and other students new to our building, know their first period teachers name. We will have many adults at the entrance to the building, in the hallways and outside classrooms to help direct students. We also have signs posted all over the building. First period teachers will help students with directions to their second period class and we will once again have many adults in the hallways to help guide students safely and comfortably to throughout their day and entire six period day including lunches.
Bus routing. All busses will go the high school first to be screened before coming to Stanwood Middle School. For the process at the high school students receive a stamp on their wrist to verify they have been screened, please make sure your student is aware. Students being dropped off and students walking will be screened at the front of the building. At the end of the day busses will pick up students at the front of the building and parents can pick up students in our east parking lot.
As we plan for Spartans to return to Stanwood Middle School, our top priority is everyone's safety.
You and your Spartan will see videos and posters (examples below) to reflect student expectations to keep everyone safe and healthy at school.
Lunches
All teachers will make sure on Monday and Thursday students know where to go for lunch. Lunch is determined by 4th period classes. Students with classes on the first floor fourth period will have first lunch. Students with classes on the second floor fourth period will have second lunch.
As we work to follow all of the protocols required for our return, it is important that you make sure your Spartan knows the following:
a. Daily Attestation questions + temperature check to be in building.
b. Students will go straight to their first class in the morning.
c. Masks covering nose and mouth at all times.
d. Social distancing in classrooms and hallways at all times.
e. Bathroom breaks during class time only.
f. No food allowed, except in the lunch room. Water bottles are allowed, students just need to ask to step into the hallway to take a drink.
g. Bring charged chromebook and headphones daily.
Here is the link to a video that will help remind everyone of our protocols:
We understand there is a lot of information! Please do not hesitate to call the school if you need anything. We will have lots of adults available to answer student questions, keep everyone safe and make sure students are comfortable.
