Math 4 ASPIRE
Unit 1: Place Value
Welcome to 4th Grade ASPIRE Math
What We Have Been Learning
Actually teaching problem solving strategies, students learn to slow down and make a plan before jumping into finding the solution.
The 4-Steps of Problem Solving:
- Find Out-Students are asked to read each problem a minimum of two times. This allows the brain to take in the information. Students then underlined or highlighted important information and identified what the problem is asking to make sure the answer matches.
- Choose a Strategy- Students learned many strategies to approach how to solve the problem. We learned the following strategies:
* Act it Out or Use Objects * Draw or Make a Picture or Diagram
* Work Backwards * Make a Simpler Problem * Find a Pattern
- Solve- Using the strategy and information provided in the problem, students begin to solve the problem.
- Look Back- Students look back over their work to make sure their work is correct, that their answer is reasonable, and that they have answered the conditions of the problem.
Students worked multiple rigorous problems using each strategy. These problems can be found in their math journal, and some have posted their work to share with you.
Self-Paced Math- Ready....Set....GO!
Here are the things you need to know:
We spent this week walking students through Unit 1 in order to make sure all knew procedures and expectations before we split into individual work.
Each student now has a completed TEKS checklist, Unit checklist, and calendar with the plan to complete Unit 1 by the deadline.
The math activities and videos are available 24/7, so students can work at home or on weekends as well. Videos are available in Google Classroom and Activities and Pre-Tests are available through Think Central.
Textbooks will be coming home Monday to keep for the school year as a reference tool. Please do not mark in or tear out the pages.
Here is a letter for parents to help you log in and see what and how your child has been doing. Your child's login is their student email address (first 3 letters of last name followed by 4 digits @gcisdstudents.net) and the password is math4.
As the program gets underway, we expect some bumps (after all technology is involved). Please be patient and let us know if you are having difficulty.
