FAQ
I don't have internet service: This is why libraries are so great! You can hook up to the Louisville Public Library internet even outside in the parking lot and your school-issued device can hook up to the internet even in the school parking lot. Get your updates, check out what you want, it will download and is now available for you to read or listen offline.
Can I access Sora on a computer: YES! Sora is available in app form and you can use your credentials on any device AND can access the same resources through a computer by using the website. https://soraapp.com/library/neschoolsne
How do I find my school: When the app comes up it gives you some school choices, you are looking for Louisville Public School District 32. Don't see that click on the lower menu to search for Louisville. It shows up as a Nebraska Schools Shared Collection.
What do I use to log on to Sora: Students and staff will use their Google credentials A.K.A. their lpslions.org email address and password. Most students know their Google sign-on information or follow the prompts to use the passwords stored on the device. Contact Mrs. Krejci at akrejci@lpslions.org if you are having problems.
What if I want to log in using a personal device: Students will use their Google Userid (including the @lpslions.org) and their password. For our younger users who would like to install on a personal device and do not know their password, families can email Mrs. Krejci at akrejci@lpslions.org using the parent/guardian email registered with the school and we will provide the username and password.
Who gets to see what books: This is a Pre K through a twelfth-grade resource that has three main categories. Based on a student's grade level, they see different categories or layers. The collection is cultivated by an Overdrive librarian and uses recommendations for titles from sources like School Library Journal and publisher recommendations.
K-5 see juvenile titles
6-8 see young adult and juvenile titles
9-12 and staff members have access to everything including general adult titles
Adult titles are those books published for adults but found to be great reads for high school students.
If we add my public library, what will the student be able to check out: Public library resources are restricted to only titles in their layer as well (see above). To add the public library collection from the menu in the upper right corner choose add a public library. Look for Nebraska Overdrive Libraries. Louisville students do not need a library card to add the collection. Family members can get a library card and their own access to Nebraska Overdrive Libraries on their own devices by contacting the library or click HERE for more information on this service and online enrollment.
How do I better help my student find books: Using explore, you can use the pre-formatted groups to find great titles or search for a book using the advanced search. Click explore in the bottom menu, click on the search box in the upper right, use advanced search to search by a variety of settings. Here are some of the most important when it comes to choosing just right books.
- Audience: These are the three layers. Elementary only sees Juvenile, but Middle School students may want to see only Young Adult titles, High School might only want to look at Young Adult or General adult to weed out Picture Books Etc. There are better ways to search, but this is an option.
- Interest Level: This gives broader categories that look more at the grade level age of the student. It is NOT a reading level. It means that the topic or format is of interest to a particular grade level group. There are 4 different self-explanatory ranges to choose from.
- Text Difficulty: Here is where knowledge of a student's grade reading level is helpful or users can just search by a grade level. The best way to determine if a book is too hard is to use the 5 Finger Rule presented above and to not tell students a book is too easy. The goal is to read and that reading is FUN and sometimes that means we read silly books, picture books, old favorites we have read before and books to help them stretch.
- Simple Search: Forget using the advanced search and just type in "Read-Along" or Picture Books", etc. Sora is great at finding types of books this way too. Just remember, it is not Google, so when students want to type in a question, the catalog does not work that way.
What are Assigned Books: These are books that we might have a class read and are not part of the general collection. It is sort of like renting a set of classroom novels and is set up by the librarian through a contract with Overdrive. Teachers cannot suggest books using this feature.
